vRS Sluggish on acceleration - The Return

Featured Replies

I have noticed this past few days the car vRS 2.0FSI seems particularly sluggish, as if the Turbo isn't working/kicking in . For example sat at 70-80MPH in 6th put the foot to the floor and nothing, creeps up very slowly like it needs kicking down a gear or two. Even in low gears and high revs it doesn't pull like it used too.

Car has recently had it's second service at 22K Miles 14/04 and is 18 months old, trips I do are 54 miles a day return mainly motorway. Also noticed the fuel consumption is showing 21mpg, the car feels like it's got no poke and is misfiring. The type when you had your first car many years ago and your plugs needed cleaning and points resetting, or it was pinking as you were running on substandard fuel or had put 2 Star in by mistake.

I have some Cataclean stuff which I am going to try in tomorrow on my way home from work, then fill with Shell V Power or the Tesco equivalent and see it that makes any difference, other than that it's a trip back to the dealer.

Any other ideas or things I can check, at the service the dealer reported no issues reported on diagnostics and the car was fine, it has since developed this issue. Oil levels are fine and oil is clean, exhaust isn't smoking and I have no warning lights of any sort. Even been running with Air Con off.

How's the air filter?

The last time mine was serviced Skoda didn't even check it, never mind replace.

Failing that it sounds like there are issues to say the least.

Maybe somebody local who has VAG.COM could plug it in and have a look for you before you go to the dealers.

Air filter or duff tank of fuel IMHO; easy to rectify both before hopping off to your dealer for a 'diagnostic'.

You could try someone local with VCDS first.

Unfortunately I'm not that local. If possible along with the scan do some logging on the road.

Thx guys will give that a go and keep you informed. Air Filter & Fuel that is.

Alternatively something stupid like a loose HT lead or wrongly installed plug? Dealers would (should) have had them all out at the service, and if something hasn't quite been put back right then that could be it.

If it wasn't misfiring before the service and has started doing so after then it's unlikely to be the case that the air filter is suddenly so clogged that it's affecting the car's breathing, when it wasn't doing so immediately pre-service. Rubbish though some dealers are, it's difficult to imagine that they opened up the filter housing and pumped a load of cack INTO the filter!

If it's a problem that surfaced since the service, start by thinking of the things that would have been messed with during the service. I'd start at plugs and leads. The bad tank of fuel's a good guess too - you can usually smell stale petrol though - open the tank and give it a sniff (not whilst smoking )

Slight problem with that, I can't smell Petrol, ever since working in a Garage for years during my School/College Days.

Anyway further update on the way home tonight the amber engine light came on warning of emissions/exhaust issues manual states the engine management system will reduce performance and contact dealer. Which is what I have been experiencing, anyway filled up this evening £50 worth of Shell V Power and the Car is in at the Dealers tomorrow at 08:30 for them to see what the issue is. Hopefully it is something minor and not the start of a bigger and longer problem.

A 22k car will not have a blocked air filter (not unless you been driving across the Sahara). Will not cause misfiring either.

You have some other problem - very difficult to say what. Could be duff fuel pump, lambda sensor fault etc etc., there are a lot of possibilities.

would any one agree if i suggested possible knackered diaphragm on the re-circ valve?

Which dealer serviced it? And is it going back to the same one again?

I'm fairly local with VAG-COM, so give me a shout if need be.

Steve

Certainly, when mine went the car went into limp mode but not check engine light. When in limp the best way to describe it was thta it dove like a standard 2ltr car with no turbo, MPG dropped to mid 20's as your has.

To be honest without getting the faut code read, you could be chasing this all over the place.

Went in to dealers this morning, now IIRC it has been one of those days. It was throwing up error 70 a faulty air inlet valve, so as stated drives like a normal car with nothing much above approx 60mph in power that is.

As usual part needs ordering and has to go back in, managed 22mpg coming into work and I put £50 of V Power in it last night so not seeing the benefit :(

The fault is back again with a vengeance.

11/06/09 - 23,162 Miles the Air mast metre was replaced by the dealer, and all was well until just before Crimbo..

31/12/09 - 27,532 Miles Engine Warning Light came on with the car running like a standard 2.0L and drinking petrol again. Took to dealers and the light was reset and the car is to go in for a few days to diagnose problem.

12/01/10 - 15/01/10 - 27,657 Miles, Engine Warning Light back on and running like a standard 2.0L and drinking petrol. Took in to dealers, who had it for 4 days running full diags & road tested. No Fault Found

18/01/10 - 23/01/10 - 27,707 Miles, Engine Warning Light back on after 20 miles, running like a standard 2.0L and drinking petrol again. Taken into dealers who had it for 5 days, diagnosed a faulty Air mast metre, which was replaced with a new one and car road tested for 110 miles, now showing 34mpg on road test by dealer. Was due to be returned to me this morning 23/01 but on way to drop off the Car the Engine Warning Light came back on!!!!!. So a loan car has been provided.

Anyone any idea, it's driving me nuts, was so looking forward to getting the car back today. Now I am awaiting a call Monday to see what the problem "still" is.

Car apparently has a faulty ECU, which are in Constraint so been waiting for a part, with one being due in to the UK on Friday 5th February. By which time the dealer will of had my Car for 23 days this year and myself 13!!!!

Is a faulty ECU a common problem reading the Sticky at the top of the forum, or just what gets blamed if all other avenues have been exhausted?

Seems to be a recurring theme that cars start running badly after servicing. Can't be a coincidence. Thats why i always use small independent garages. Main dealers always seem to f..k something up.

Oh dear, its the "faulty ECU" again :dull: I doubt it very much, more likely a faulty loom to the meter perhaps. Sounds like the garage have run out of ideas, is it under warranty? If so, try another dealer, or try a specalist and bill them for the fix. You could also insist on having someone down from Skoda to assist in fixing it, as it does seem they've had more than a resonable chance to fix.

  • Author

Yes it's still under warranty Car is under 3 years old and on the free servicing deal, have one more service left at 32K so can't really go to an independent, yet..

The dealers tell me they have had the car connected up and Skoda have been linked in and reviewing the diag results etc. But I too feel they are running out of ideas especially when they phone up asking if it has been chipped or modified in any way. When I answered no, which is hasn't. They asked are you sure? I stated the Car is under 3 years old on warranty and free servicing so why would I, especially and their records show this, that they applied new firmware/software to the ECU at the 20K Service. They then said are you sure you've not fitted a different air filter K&N or something as it could be that causing the problem. I again restated the above, and no I haven't touched or modified the car in anyway it is all stock as new supplied and serviced by them. Did forget to tell them I had put new Michelin tyres on the front through just in case that was the fault!!!

Will obviously have to let them fit the new ECU and see what happens, hopefully it will solve the problem, so they tell me.

As for another dealer, having bought the Car from the dealer that is trying to fix it and has done all the servicing and work to date, would another dealer take on the car to fix or just refer me back to the supplying dealer and the one that has done all the work to date?.

Thx

I suppose from a legal point of view, its worth sticking to the supplying dealer. However I have found a huge variation in technical ability of dealers. Its worth trying another one if the ECU does'nt fix it. Where abouts are you located?

I would certainly insist on the presense of someone from Skoda when the ECU is replaced, as you don't want a repeat of events if it does'nt fix it.

Well ECU finally arrived and after problems with internet link into Skoda it was successfully fitted on Thursday 11th. Only to identify a fault on another component that they didn't have in stock, but ordered and got delivered on Friday. But now they can't get the new part to speak with the ECU, now due in theory to get the Car back on Monday, day 29 after originally taking it in.

On a positive note they have found the problem on the old ECU during testing and can replicate the problem on the old ECU at will.

I am now rapidly losing patience with the Dealers & Skoda another part fitted, further tests, further faults, further delays, further broken promises on dates the car is to be returned to myself. But to make matters even worse further promises to phone me back and keep me up to date on current status, and no phone calls. A promise on Friday I would have the car back Monday gone but nothing not even a phone call, resulting in me calling them Tuesday afternoon when I had still heard nothing. :swear:

Now no disrespect to any mechanics on here, but from what I am being told they don't appear to do much other then swap parts. Dealer advises they run diags, send results to Skoda who say swap part A, they do this run diags again send to Skoda who then say swap part B and so on and so on for over a month now and there are still problems. So far they have got through and I can't remember all the parts but 2 x Air Mast Meters, an ECU, air intake pipes, various temperature sensors, and more. :wall:

It is doing my f :swear: ing head in, losing all confidence in the car, the dealers especially and Skoda.

Rant over, apologies.

Time to call for a meeting with the principle and insist on a skoda tech doing the work themselves. They should have someone who goes out to dealers, sort of 2nd line support type of thing.

Have they checked for split diverter valve , dump valve on turbo, if that has gone it will pull like a non turbo. :S

So it wasn't the ECU afterall?

  • Author

Thanks for the input guys.

Spoke with the Dealers this morning, the Car is still undergoing testing and is looking more positive today.

I also mentioned to them the diverter valve, which he was going to go and check with the mechanic to see if it had been changed or was the later revision, which will be handy if it has been changed or is updated should I chose the STS Stage 1 remap, that is if I ever get the Car back ;-)

They have swapped the ECU and say there was a fault on the old one that they have proved under diags, so can only go on what they say. But it also turns out that all the follow on issues identified and being fixed post the new ECU may have all been resolved yesterday when they synched all the internal systems to the new ECU which they hadn't previously done. So it does make you wonder.

As for a meeting with the Service Principle, I will be requesting one and compensation once it has been fixed which hopefully may be this week, but if not I will request a meeting next week sometime as I can't get in there until mid next week anyway. What sort of compensation could I request or be looking for based on the car is already on free servicing and has been valleted?
