Adding Voice Control to Columbus

Featured Replies

I've had a few people asking me how to rig up the voice control for use with the new firmware in the RNS510. I've had a similar setup in my car, known as SDS, since I bought it and it works well. This is how I've done it myself (and this one is for Hedge's little passion wagon) - perhaps a little more complicated than required but, as ever, entirely reversible come sale time.

Parts you'll need (assuming you have the 26xx firmware and OEM Bluetooth installed and a MFSW) -

Female Microphone Plug x1 1J0 973 332

Male Microphone Plug x1 1J0 973 119

Repair Wire x2 000 979 019 (for Plug 1J0 973 119)

Repair Wire x2 000 979 132 (for Plug 1J0 973 332)

Repair Wire x2 000 979 009 (for Plug 3B7 035 447 B)

2 - 3m of screened cable (minimum of 4 core), some heat shrink and soldering equipment.

Connections are as follows -

Plug 3B7 035 447 B

Pin 7 = Mic In +ve

Pin 1 = Mic In -ve

Pin 9 = Mic Out +ve

Pin 4 = Mic Out -ve

The idea is to remove the plug from the microphone in the headlining and plug in one end of this replacement lead which is then run down the door pillar, to the back of the head unit and connected to the Mic In connections in the existing green plug (3B7 035 447 B). From the Mic Out connections in the green plug and back up to the microphone but this time plugging in to the cable that runs to the Bluetooth Unit. I've soldered the connections and used heat shrink to tidy it up a little.

Here is the head unit end complete (i'll post up the other end when the plugs arrive)

I have never heard of this before can you tell me more about this please?

If you have an RNS510/Columbus with OEM Bluetooth and a MFSW then it is possible to configure the unit to have full voice control of many functions.

Thanks for that Stu.

I had one of your OEM Bluetooth kits in my Caddy and the Voice dialling on it was fantastic! I'm just gutted I will be without this feature on my new vRS when it arrives :(

Yeah I guess you won't have the MFSW on the FL.

I've not tried the voice on the RNS510 but if it's anything like SDS on the Audi then it's awesome.

No MFSW as I have ordered a manual vRS.....what are Skoda thinking

I could retro-fit the 3 spoke MFSW but this has the flappy paddles which would look naff on a manual and there is the 4 spoke wheel as fitted to the L&K but I'm not sure this would look right in a vRS :(

Sorry gone a bit off topic here, I would love to see a Columbus with this voice control if anyone near me has it.

I'm still trying to find the firmware ISO.

I assumed as it has been quoted as a feature of the new firmware its in the update that everyone has been using which is linked in another thread.

will this work on a new superb elegance with columbus, and which button on the 4 spoke MFSW would be used for voice control?

Thanks

Not sure, did a trial fit on Hedges car yesterday and it wasn't completely successful.

Interested to hear of other people's experience.

:(

which button on the 4 spoke MFSW would be used for voice control?
None I guess - on my unit, pressing the "Speaker" button, top right appears to start off voice control mode, it talks to me and shows me an on screen list of reponses...

All I need now is the connectors in re-route the mic cable and see what happens - I've been told that some coding is needed with VCDS to active things, but I looks like it is all set and ready to go

BTW: I have the MFSW buttons for voice activated dialing already installed and working

...and I'll post a link in here too for anyone who's interested.

Pre-wired Columbus mic << Clicky! :)

Anyone know how to get hold of the part number for one of these? I'd prefer to order from my local dealer if poss :)

i asked my dealer about this and was told that they would not fit it as it was not a genuine skoda part. He also mentioned that Audi have been having lots of issues with their voice control and skoda are not happy to enable / install this until it's more reliable.

Has anyone had problems with the columbus voice control?

I have just add the voice control to my Octy vRS (JKM Edition)

Instead running a new cable to join to the BT mic input I re-run the existing cable as there is loads of spare that you have to hide on the original BT install.

Re route to the rear of the HU, cut the mic cable then solder on the repair wires as previously posted by Stu.

Connect as per Stu's instructions, hey presto I got voice control on my Columbus.

You would.

You would.

........ It even understands commands with my accent

I fitted my Columbus and Bluetooth yesterday and all went well. I used the Kufatec wire set to re-route the mic for the voice control. I switched the Columbus on and had a little play and to my surprise the voice control function was already there :D. I'm not sure what version of fw it's on because I've not had the coding done yet.

For those of you that were wondering what the voice control is like I have done a quick video demo. Most of all I like how the voice control can access the voice functions of the phone kit without the need for a MFSW.

Liam

I am really pleased with it. It has all come together so well.

And what's this ablut my dodgy accent?? I thought that was you!!!

Likewise I re-routed the existing mic cable to the back of the headunit, and then added a new cable from the headunit back up to the mic. Rather than cut any cables I made these up -

mic1.jpg

One shell and repair wire (as per Stu's post) connected to one of the repair wires (00 979 009) that simply push into the quadlock connector. This allows the existing mic cable to connect to the RNS510.

mic2.jpg

One end of the new cable that runs from the mic to the head unit - using the other shell and repair wire that Stu mentioned.

mic3.jpg

The other end of the new cable, connected to an other quadlock repair wire (000 979 009)

BTW: 000 979 009 is a pack of 5 double ended repair wires, of which only two are needed.

How did you determine which of the microphone wires is positive and which is negative? I've got all the parts from Stu's post and I'm ready to go. This is the only thing I'm unsure about. :)

TIA!

Ray

Thanks for that, Liam, but - having read right through - although i know that I must get the polarity right, I still don't know how to ensure that I do.

Ray

OK, here is the thing. I do NOT have BT in my car. Kind of regret not ordering it now, but that is water under the bridge. I do however have a factory fitted Columbus.

Late last year I also had an MFSW added to my car - fitted and coded by Shark.

Now I DO have voice control over my Columbus, however I've got no idea where there is a microphone for this to work. I press the button on the MFSW so it knows I'm about to talk and I can switch from Radio to Media and vice-versa.

Skip tracks, mute, change albums all from voice.

No idea where it's hearing it all from, but I certainly don't have BT installed.
