electric windows don't work

Featured Replies

Most of the time they work but i've experienced once when both front windows don't work and once when only the drivers side window works. Also sometimes the passenger side electric window acts strange. When I want the window to go up it goes up an inch or two then goes all the way back down. What could this problem be?

My wife's Fabia (2 years old now) has had the same problem now and again. The supplying dealer has had it in twice to try and fix it. It does not show any fault codes unfortunately. The service department said that the Roomster had a similar issue so they replaced a part (switch unit I think) that seemed to work in the Roomster. However the fault still occurs now and then. We also have an occasional problem with no sound coming from the radio.

It goes in for service on Friday and they say they might try a new software 'flash'. Will let you know what transpires. There is a definite electrical gremlin somewhere.

my drivers side window is also faulty, if the window is half way down and i go to put it up it goes all the way down then i have to pull the button again

its annoying

Mine did this, although it was a Fabia I, but still.

This might not be of any use, and I suggest some caution to save breaking anything, but mine was slightly out of its runners. It would go up (very slowly, and often needed helping) but when first told to go up, it would go up slightly, then back down. Twisted it in its frame slightly the other week, and its fine again now. This probably won't be likely unless it struggles when it does go up though.

It could be possible that for some reason an anti-trap thing is going off, telling the window to retracts.

The switch/acting odd is also a trait of the 1st model, and can sometimes be solved by removing the fuse for a minute or two, or by holding the switch in the up position when the window is fully would up until the motor clicks.

Thanks, I look forward to seeing what happens.

Mine's only a year old.

There's one thing I notice in the left passenger window is that when I make the window go down a tiny bit of the rubber along the middle of the rubber strip is slightly trapped into the glass if you know what I mean - but I don't see how this can affect anything.

Does the Fabia have some kind of anti trapping feature/sensor which makes the windows go down if it detects something, e.g fingers, on its way up.

55, as Trigger says...try resetting your window that is giving trouble. To do this just turn on the ignition. Lower the offending window all the way down. Next...just operate the window to close all the way up, but hold the switch in the up position after it closes for a full 3 seconds or until the window motor clicks. This re-orientates the window mechanism. It worked for me. No more problems.

Got the service done - really pleased with the dealer (Fairweathers of Dundee). The radio was due for an update of the software but it would not take the flash so we're getting a new unit fitted next week under warranty (cost>£400!).

The electric windows have been fine for a while and he could not find any fault - so will try Estateman's idea to re-orientate the window mechanism

It was the 2 year service (includes brake fluid change, strip/clean rear brakes and change pollen filter).- £164.51. They also found a nail in the o/s rear and fixed it free of charge!

As with rkenny I've not experienced the problem for a while now , for 2 weeks now, The windows work find (at the moment) but i'll try estateman's trick when the problem arises,

The one time when both windows didn't work I meant they literally wouldn't open no matter how many times or how long I pressed the switches.

thanks

Passenger side electric window

No longer works. It needs a new winding mechanism. If we get one has anyone been brave enough to try fitting it themselves. And do they have pics. We fitted an evaporation temperature sensor for the AC this way. Was not easy but it now works. Any help with fitting the new electric winding mechanism would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Carol, I haven't fitted a window mechanism to the Fabia but I have done it a hundred times to many other vehicles. It's very straightforward. I don't have any pics to show you as I did this as a tech. Best advice I can give you is don't be afraid...carefully remove the switches, handles etc from the inside of the door, remove the inside panel, and take a piccy of the mechanism after carefully peeling back the internal door membrane on the inside of the door. I don't know what exactly you are needing to replace but if the Fabia is like most vehicles, whatever it is, it's a doddle! Just be careful when removing the door panel not to damage it, they can be difficult. If you want reassurance just check a workshop manual or search this site. Someone better than me will have carried this out on your specific motor.

I would like to add that the plastic clips which hold the panel in place are very easy to break so may be worth getting some spares.
