Footwell Light & Silver Paint - PIC

Featured Replies

Yup, as title really.. Fitted some footwell lights based on some generic side repeater fittings (they're perfect for it, self contained units with reflector, lens and mountings).

They're hooked into the main interior lamp and because they're bulbs they dim in the same subtle way! I know they look orange in the pic, but they are the same colour as the rest of the lights, it's just because of the day light throwing the camera.

And, as you can see, painted the air vents and centre ash tray / gaiter surround all silver to match the kn0b, dials and pedals! :D I'm quite pleased with it all really! ;) Paint finish came out much better than I expected, the normal reaction is "What, these.. you did these???" Can't say fairer than that.

All comments welcome!

very nice! I like it! :D

question - does your radio and bottom draw fit flush to the dash because ever since i've taken my radio out it doesnt fit perfectly flush to the draw or the dash any more :(

Looks nice. Like the lights a lot, have been meaning to fit some myself at some point.

The vents look good, seen a few like this before, and they do look nice.

One question would be, if possible, do you have a picture of the mounting point for the foot-well lights?

Yeah, my Radio and draw fit flush.. sometimes they need lots of jigging around though and the ariel connection is a huge PITA! The radio will only go all the way in if it's trailing down or to the right, otherwise if fowls the cage.

TriggerFish, Give me a min and I'll find one for ya! :D

Here ya go, I bought a spare upper center consul.. the part that's black on all Fabia's. I just cut a notch wide enough for the lamp at the top back and then just screwed them in.. it was actually dead easy.

Only thing with this location is the accelerator pedal casts a bit of a shadow, but not to bad.. if I was doing it again I'd probably see If I could mount the lamp a few inches forward.

Can better gauge the colour of the light in those last photos as well, should look good in the dark.

Bloody hell mate, well done, I'm liking all of that

i think that looks proper smart.

did you have to remove the vents and any of the interior panels to paint them?

Thanks! Just noticed yours in the other thread, saw them in the video you pointed out to me too! I like the chrome rings but I'm in two minds about them now I've gone the matt silver Aluminum look.

Thanks, I removed everything I wanted to paint.. Infact, I bought doubles incase I messed it up (Thanks Alex ;) ) I only wanted to point paint at things I wanted painting.

Me likey too - top job! Where did you tap into the interior light wiring by the way?

Took the cable round the back of the Glove box, up past the side of the dash and then up the A-pillar trim..

Luckily the previous owner had already put the Nokia Mic in the OEM position and left miles of spare cable so I pulled some back and cable tied my lights power cable to it and just pulled it back through. It popped out above the light.. great! Then just attached to back of light fitting. I think you can just pop the head lining down at the front if your carful though.

Haven't blown any fuses yet and they've been in a month or two. They're 5w bulbs, I'm wodering if 3w would blend better.

That's very nice - I like that :D

Them lights look good, not keen on the vents though

Looks good, I like it a lot!

I've been tempted to paint the plastics around the vents after seeing a few pics on different threads! The only thing putting me off is the thought of how much of a mare it could be to remove them without damaging them in any way! Any tips?

Very nice, subtle as well. Being Scottish I think I will fit the lights, just in case I drop a penny. Dropped 50 pence last week, and it hit me in the back of the head when I bent down to pick it up. :D

Thats a agreat job, very subtle but it makes a huge differance- may be the next thing that gets done to the interior on most of the Fabs here i think.

Just needs a A piller boast gauge now

Thought these pics I finally found (to many memory cards knocking about) would help.

After doing the below I ran/tapped a cable round the inside of this trim, from the first lamp, and hooked up to the then 2nd lamp on the other (passenger) side. This is because of the way you remove and install this trim part, Just running across the back would mean you could no longer fit it back in, or if you did it once in, you'd not be able to remove it.

I soaked the bulbs in methylated spirt and then scrapped of the orange colour. These clear units always come with orange bulbs.

If your carful and think about what your actually poking / levering against the vents come out quite easily.. Dinner Knifes are your friend ;) Once you've shifted the top or bottom they'll hold it from popping back in as you release the opposite side.

To paint you can completely dismantle the vent so it's only the surrounding frame that you work with.. but you have to be carful not to

A. Send a locating spring flying from the up down wheel, and..

B. The fins are quite fragile, not new born baby style, but a ham fist could break them.

Gotta say Reflex88, That looks the biz!!

Am certainly going to be doing footwell lighting on mine...

I have a pair of brand new Polo Numberplate 5watt light fittings

(Part number 1J6 943 021) which snap into a small rectangular hole about 3quarters of an inch by 2 inches. These were leftover from an interior lighting project on my old MK3 Golf. Hardest part I reckon, will be cutting the holes neatly for the fittings. But when I get time... They're going into my Fabia.... ATM they have green bulbs in them. Will see how they look before I change them.

Great job mate i really like the lights and interior painted bits

Thanks Guys!

If it helps anyone, the part number on the trim I removed from my car was

6Y2 863 243 B.

To fit it you have to remove the whole center console, but this is quite straight forward.

Fab job there:thumbup:

I was thinking about doing this so did a search and up this popped.

I'm going to fit some puddle lights in the bottom of the front doors of my 1.4 16v elegance, running them off the red door warning lights, by getting some more red warning lights and swapping the lenses out with the estate compartment lenses (an exact match, just different colour plastic) and now i know what i can do with the spare red lenses.

Ooh red feet:cool:

Now that IS interesting, I was looking into this a while ago but lost momentum when I couldn't find a clear lens to replace the red, but sounds like you may well have cracked it! With a little red tint film could be a warning light as well as puddle light like in the golfs etc.
