Secondary air system (blanking)

Featured Replies

Hi guys

Mine is starting to make the vacuum noise when first starting the car (I'm aware of the fix with new bolts etc... which I will do soon I think).

Just wondering what the benefit of blanking this whole secondary system would be? I see forge sell a blanking plate...

Cheers

you physically remove the pump and associated crap. Saves a few kilos of weight. Also cleans up access to the front of the engine. Usually combined with a Decat.

Mine's coming out next month after my hols. I'll take lots of pics as always! :D

Me thinks this is also my next mod. Just bought the blanking plate to be ready.

need to see how to stop ecu throwing a check light as well, when system removed.

There's a link on my thread to the 330OHM resistors you need in pace of each electronic bit.

i have done this on mine and fitted the 330 ohm resistors but the light is still on ?

I read about this on the Seat forums as this is a popular mod and they seem to get the cell light also. So it appears to be hit and miss.

I believe on a mapped car, then a mapper can custom the map to stop the cell coming on.

This might be my next move instead of fitting resistors.

If you remove the secondary air system the light will come on as the car knows what readings it should get and will soon realise that it's not getting enough air to protect your cat on cold start up. The only reason you have secondary air pumps is to protect the cat on start up as it weakens the mixture going through the cat. Never really seen the point of removing it as when the car is warm it shouldn't be running and you really shouldn't be driving your car very hard when it's cold anyway.

The reasons I'm removing mine are: The pump is on its way out, and I plan to decat :)

I have to disagree there. The actual only reason you have a secondary air pump is to reduce cold start emissions, and to get the cat up to operational temperature quickly for emissions. I've never read anything about increasing cat life. There are plenty of cars with cats and no air pumps.....

Here's what Pierburg say:
