Hate wires, so tried to keep it as tidy as possible with the home cinema system instead of seperate amp etc. :o

BTW the DAV-IS10 is quite powerful, and the tiny surround speakers are fantastic.

The sub you can see in the pic on the bottom right of the shot doesn't half make the windows rattle

Onkyo 806 amp

I need to upgrade my receiver and wondered about the 8 series Onkyo’s. How do you rate their upscaling and sonic performance? I realise that there have been a raft of new models of late.

Nothing exciting/special but it's all we need/want for now:

32" HD LG LCD TV

Sony 5.1 surround sound upscalling DVD player (god knows what model number) connected via HDMI

Wii (connected through component)

Satelite reciever box connected through scart (currently tuned to German TV for Sven)

Fujitsu Scaleo E P4 630 HT, 3GB Ram, HD 2400 pro, Nova T-500 dual DVB tuner 200 GB HDD connected via DVI/HDMI

Future plans are bigger TV then use this in bedroom and upgrade HDD in media centre along with a Blu ray drive.

No pics... sorry!

Phil

Hi Lady Elanore,

The onkyos are excellent sonically, especially the 8 series. I didn't buy it for upscaling (mine only converts all inputs to HDMI) as I all my sources are HD anyway.

If you want an upscaling amp then you need the 876 or upwards. The onkyo's are great value and there should be some deals around. They do run hot though and are big, so make sure you have room. Be wary of the newer 806 model as i believe there were issues with blue dots or something similar appearing on the upscaled picture.

Good luck:thumbup:

Hi Such. I already have an early model Onkyo and am familiar with the heat problem (or supplementary room heater as I call it). I nearly bought an 875 in a sale at Superfi but missed out on it. It had the Hollywood chip:thumbup:, but as yet I haven’t seen an 876 in the flesh. I have a feeling the 876 doesn’t have this HQ chip though? Oh and it will be a bit pricey possibly?

Obviously my old DVDs and Freeview watching (if I can bear to watch the pathetic image quality that now purports to be a broadcast!) is SD and although my Kuro does a fine job of upscaling, I would like the whole shebang to be though the Receiver. One problem of using the Video/RGB outputs of the individual machines is my 605 doesn’t ARC, so using HDMI would carry the necessary switching info. Now if someone did a decent receiver with scart inputs so I can use pin 8, I would be a happy bunny. Perhaps I should run my amp on Economy 7?

I think I am wrong, the 876 does have the Reon chip

Oh yes I see you have an onkyo 605. Unfortunately you'll won't ever find a receiver / amp with scart. I don't watch any of my old dvds now, just blu or hddvd.

You can find some refurbished 875's around if you google.

I know what you mean about eco7, my amp often gets left on!

If you're thinking of getting rid of the 605 Amanda, let me know

Will do. I was thinking of changing my car, but it looks like anything I order won’t be delivered till next year and hence be hit with the 2.5% VAT increase. This would mean dropping off a couple of extras or saving up a bit longer. The alternative is to waste my money buying Gadgety junk:D

Great news that the Tories want to put a £1,000 extra tax on new cars.
