Hi Guys

I have these LED DRL's Fitted to my dads Skode Superb. These have EU type approval and road legal. They are wired directly to a ignition source and they are also connected to the main headlight beam power source for the purpose of auto dimming the LED's for night time use alongside your main lights. They are very high quality too. Anyway pics attached. If anyones interested is a set give me a shout. I should be able to source more at a resonable price

They look pretty smart, but don't seem half as bright as the factory fit DRL's that the latest Audis/Mercs/Porkers use, or is that just the camera?

They are actually very bright. I'd say as bright as the Audi ones. My gf has an A5 and the brightness seemed similar.

I thought type approval was given for a certain piece of equipment, in a certain installation in a certain vehicle and once taken out of those exacting condition type approval is no longer valid.

I've not done any customisation of the beast as yet - so a good place to start then.

Better check with SWMBO first though:)

Might help stop other drivers from assuming its a small skoda and jump out on me at roundabouts - big prob where I live!

All legal EU approved DLR's have to have the markings below clearly showing when fitted to veichle. These LED DRL's have that mark. So they can be used with complete confidence knowing they can be used across the EU. This has been confirmed by the Irish Road Saftey Authority.

The Road Safety Authority is currently drafting a public consultation document on DRL (Daytime Running Lights). This consultation document will invite stakeholder feedback on the proposal to make the use of dedicated DRLs or dipped headlights mandatory for all road vehicles on Irish roads all year round.

In accordance with EU Directive 2008/89/EC, dedicated Daytime Running Lights (DRL) will be required on all new types of passenger cars and small vans from February 2011 onwards, and on all new other types of vehicles from August 2012 onwards. In line with this Directive, Daytime Running Lights fitted to vehicles will be required to be type approved to the requirements of UNECE Regulation 87. Type approved DRLs have fulfilled specific test requirements including requirements for intensity and colour of light, light distribution angles and light source module. Every daytime running lamp conforming to type approval will have an approval mark which is indelible and clearly legible even when the lamp is mounted on the vehicle. The image below presents an example of a daytime running lamp approved in the Netherlands (E4). The symbol “RL” is a unique identification for the approval of daytime running lamps. Type approved DRLs will be mandatory for new vehicles under Directive 2008/89/EC and currently vehicles equipped with such devices are legal. These lights are switched on automatically by the vehicle when the engine is started. When it is dark the driver has to switch on the (full and dipped) head-lights manually and this automatically turns off the dedicated DRL. Head lamps and fog-lights for example, will have alternative symbols identifying that these lamps have being type approved for that purpose on a vehicle. Such unique identifiers on both DRL and fog-lights will aid in the enforcement of Road Traffic (Lighting of Vehicles) Regulations as fog-lights can be “used only in fog or while snow is falling” (S.I. No. 189 of 1963, Regulation 49(8)) while DRL lighting should be used during daylight hours

I can get 2 sets at €100 at cost to me. Its just the cost of shipping to the UK thats to be added. I'll make no money on these. They retail at €149.00!

I got my Rear ARB from Balance motorsport in the UK. The make is Whiteline. It makes a huge difference!

I think you're missing my point.

Something can be type approved all you like, but I thought type approval only covers a certain fixture, when fitted under specific conditions.

For example a superb Xenon headlight system can be type approved, but if you fit the system to the roof of a jeep as the headlights, then the type approval is invalidated.

So the type approval covers:

- The light

- The accessories required with it

- The fitting

- The vehicle fitted to.

- Operation

If you change any of those factors the type approval is gone.

The above seems to mention type approval on a vehicle (as per other lights) and also things required such as the headlights coming on means the DLR go off etc.

That seems to go with my thought of the facts it is fitting, vehicle, operation etc.

Hence my point that if I am correct on Type approval applying to a whole system/car not just the component on it's own, then how can you type approve a generic after market product?

Your right of course in that they have to be fitted within a certain area of a car. There is a specific approval number identifying these lights as DRL's and this number is visable on the lens when fitted. Theses lenses have the required number identifying them as such. Also the approval number is shown part of the type approval.

The the dimensions for fitting these lights are specified within the fitting instruction manual.

Just to be clear. The fitting of the lights shows in the pictures above are within thew fitting guidelines

P.S the type approval I'm talking about is specific to these light

I think maybe we're getting crossed wires.

What I'm asking is "does type approval not apply to the car/light/fitting/everything combination".

Eg you can't type approve a light for all cars, just one. You could then get type approval for all the other cars separately too.

Either way they look nice, but the 150 euro asking price is a tad steep.

Which I have brought many for my MX5 (and were identical to your picture including fittings) - hopefully just a cheap copy.

Anyway - they are bright good value from ebay man in Hong Kong. However these bring into light another 'water ingress problem'. They are great for a while. In fact brillant for indoor proposes. Outdoors however the LEDs legs corrode inside and they become dim. Alright for a while.

So the above ebay ones that look identical should be avioded for outdoor use if your looking around on ebay for a 'cheaper' set.

Hello all - this is my first post, so be gentle with me!

I have a 2005 Superb I, 2.5tdi Elegance - I would like to fit DRLs like the 1st picture and have bought some.

I have been looking all over the place how to wire them in properly - maybe wire them into the fusebox? Link them to the sidelights?

I have read on a few forums that there is a DRL (or TFL as it's known in Germany) pin on the headlight switch (pin 3).....so if there is a DRL/TFL pin, is there a corresponding wire on the loom that plugs into the back of the headlight switch? If so, where does it go?

I have also read that there is a relay (173) in the relay/fuse panel. (or is this only in later models?)

And if there is a relay, is there a wire within the loom supplying all the front lights that you can just connect to?

Sorry for all the questions, but I am spending too many hours ready thru VW/skoda web pages trying to find an easy & proper way to install these...in the hope that someone here can show me the light (if you'll pardon the pun)
