Hairdryers

Featured Replies

Yes, hairdryers. Plenty of MX5s on the forum so someone should be able to help ;)

Apparently I'm looking for something salon quality in terms of power and also 'duty cycle'. SWMBO has very thick hair and it takes ages to dry, ok she won't be using it several times a day but a couple of times a week for quite a long time. Does that make sense? Powerful and able to run happily for longish periods without burning out too soon.

Its not like <insert boy's toy>, they don't seem to have magazines for this type of thing or a review source I would trust and not mixing with hairdressers, I'm a bit stumped.

Does it have to be a traditional hairdryer? If she's got thick hair, something like an "airstyler" might be better - it's like a large round brush with holes in it out of which hot air is blown, so it gets a much better airflow through the hair and hence dries quicker. The missus has one, think it's a Nicky Clarke one and was only about £20...

Rob.

As an MX5 owner I feel able to comment :giggle: ... (although mine is significantly receding :S ...)

Wifey - who is very particular on these things and has long thick hair has one of these (I think:

Philips TRESemme SalonPro Diamond Ionic Diffuser Dryer

Hairdryer

Helpful hints are make sure it's powerful and can do lots of combinations of heat and speed and has a very long lead.

Cost isn't really a problem as the more it costs the better she will think it is.

ghds aren't cheap which is half the reason she swears by them (they other reason being they actually work). Before the ghds came along she used to have some very good but expensive, no name ceramic straightening irons that she got from a salon - all the high street stuff was apparently dross. She is going to be very sceptical of anything I can buy at Argos made by an electronics company with a hair product or celebrity snipper tie-in. She's currently using a Nicky Clarke dryer (2kW+/£20+) and wants a better one, make that a much better one as she actaully said she wanted double the power! 5kw hair dryer anyone? What does the power rating actually refer to? The motor or the heating?

Which? have a hair dryer test but I've used up my cheap trial. One looks good - very industrial rather than fancy and pricey for a hair dryer. Ticks most of her boxes. http://www.which.co.uk/reviews/hairdryers/rowenta-infini-pro-cv8525/review

For such a simple device, its amazing to see so many products on offer, its only a motor, a fan, a heating element and a switch or 2 all stuck in a bit of moulded plastic. There should be some sort of 'killer app' hairdryer that ****s on the competition from a great height, will last 10 years+ and cost south of 50 quid. Unfortunately that would blow the crap hair dryer to landfill every 2 years business model out of the water.

We have a good friend who is a hair stylist and she says that the "Salon" stuff is not all it is cracked up to be - they are not "built to last" because they have a known market and they get so much abuse...

...cut her hair off while she's sleeping...

Somewhere like Boots will sell you a decent hairdryer that will be substantial enough for your needs and not break the bank.

One thing that is important however, is to make sure the dryer has a long flex. Cheaper dryers often don’t have long mains flex and it is a real pain if you haven’t got a powerpoint near the mirror that she uses when drying her hair. My current dryer also has an ioniser switch which helps to reduce static whilst drying. It is a great invention for people with finer hair, although I am not sure about its benefit if your wife has thick locks.

Well, this is looking like a dead end. Unless I can guarantee a large improvement there's no point in replacing the one she's got.

And having tried on my Christmas present already, I'm going to have to do a bit better than a hair dryer :S
