My VRS in the Snow

Just thought you might like to see a few pics of what it's like here in Derbyshire...

I don't think I'm going out today... :p

Better to go out now while there's still grip in the snow than to try it in a day's time when it's all been compressed into ice though... :)

If you're heading out in those conditions don't forget to say "I am just going outside and may be some time" before leaving the house :p...

So you haven't had much snow there, or so it appears. I ahev cleared that much off at least three times this week.

As to vRS in the snow...................................crap. Nice car, great performance and economy. Just don't go out in the white stuff, or won't go out.

Nope, it doesn't move when it's like this. It's hardly been driven since mid Dec! I hate grit and dirty slush...

I am lucky in that I can steal my girlfriend's old Fiesta in this weather.... which, by the way, is an AWESOME snow car. :)

Just a light dusting then? :dull:

Id 100% gurantee you its the tyres mate. im running vredesteins on mine, and they are ok, but not great in the snow. last winter i was in germany and had winter tyres and i never got srtuck, and that bearing in mind that germany gets proper snow, for a good length of time.

run of the mill economy style tyres are a lot better in the snow than performance orientated. all weather tyres even better again, and winter tyres even better than them.

Looks like mine except the snow was deeper! Tried to get to work but defeated by a gradual incline. Think this is down to the type of snow (clogged up the tyre tread) as I got to the Lakes and back a couple of weeks ago in conditions as bad.

We have more than that here in Wales, the snow just laughs at my tyres-i cant get anywhere-have ordered winter tyres from "my tyres"

chilly - think this spell has really made a lot of people think about investing in some winter wheels!

So where is this ?

Matlock ? Darley Dale ?

Based on the snow we have in Chesterfield, I would have thought you would have had more if it is.

Is this where I mention that the forecast for the next few days in Melbourne is;

Thursday 26C Fine

Friday 32C Fine

Saturday 33C Fine

Sunday 33C Fine

Monday 35C Cloudy

:giggle:

Seriously, I feel simpathy for you guys and the weather conditions that you are having over there. Snow is fun on the ski fields or postcards but not to have to live with.

I ordered mine on 20th Dec, due to arrive 13 Jan

Just in time for the big thaw!

I got more snow than you so there!! :giggle:

Also the vRS is a really bad car in the snow, why should I change my tyres when the car was supplied with them. All my other work mates who laugh at me and the tank slipping away don't change their tyres :wonder:

The Mk1 was even better than this!

That's interesting.

I had assumed it was just the tyres that were making the car so crap in the snow.

I have Bridgestone Potenzas that were on it when I got it.

it is the tyres, summer tyres at temps below about 3c suffer big time as the tread compound is designed to work at much higher temperatures.

Across most of the colder EU countries the use of winter tyres is compulsory when its as cold as this, and you dont see them complaining about having to change their tyres several times a year. This is why their countries continue to function and we grind to a halt. The current UK weather is the worst its been for 30 years, and some people are seeing more snow than they have ever seen in their lives with temperatures colder than Moscow. Fitting winter tyres with the correct compound for these very low temperatures will help getting around.

chesterfield was ok but its more like ice this morning coming to work

bet theres twice as much at Darley Dale, especially up on the tops

the snow and even the amount of it isn't the really unusual thing. it's the fact that the snow has lasted for three weeks as of yesterday. The temperatures are lower than usual too. Minus 13 at 8am today and forecast to peak at minus 6 or 7.

I'm not holding my breath for a big thaw any time soon. Luckily the council were back round with a JCB again this morning taking off the top layers of snow so we are left able to drive on the firm compacted snow. There's no point gritting it, it's too cold for it to work.

I'm glad I'm not the only one stuck!

I've got Michelin Pilot Sports fitted to mine, admittedly with not much more than 2mm tread on them (co. car so can't change them till less than 2mm) and the car just will not move!

My wife's A3 1.8T Sport with nearly new Toyos Proxes on is handling the white stuff with hardly a spun wheel!

Steve

Here was mine this morning in Northumberland (the bottom pic), had been sat on the street since Monday lunchtime...have had it since 22nd December and don't think I've driven it yet on anything other than ice, snow or slush!!!

Just ordered some of those snow socks mentioned in another thread, will see if whether they arrive before the thaw!
