Heater/Glow plug test PD170 engine

Recommended Posts

Is there a fault light ie glow plug light coming on after start of do i need to do a physical meter check on the glow plugs ??

Car is getting a bit difficult to start

If there are faulty is it a DIY job or are they prone to shearing off like many cars

I would get a code scan done, might be the control relay. If it is the plugs and you DIY the job. Run penetrating oil around the plugs and leave it over-night. They can be stubborn, and if you shear one off, it gets expensive.

The glow plug light will stay on if one or more fail

The glow plugs are located under rocker cover and the rocker shafts need to be lifted to get access not a DIY in my opinion

The wiring loom that goes to the PD injectors and the glow plugs runs in the hot oil and can fail

Posible cracked head

See post from the audi sport forum

[2.0 TDI] How to know if your cylinder head will Crack (if it hasnt yet)?

Basically, there are 3 references for the cylinder heads on your 2.0 Tdi BKD engine.

Open the hood, remove the engin cover, and to the rightof the cylinder head, under the metalic fuel lines, you will see a references written upside down, with a letter at the end. Over in another forum, a survey was made with the following results.

03G 103 308 A years 2003 to 2005.55 allmost all cracked

03G 103 308 B years 2005.5 to 2006.6 only a few cracked

03G 103 308 C years 2006.5 to 2007.5 none cracked cracked

This means that for those of you who have had theirs replaced, or even with a new car, check out the letter on your reference for peace of mind.
