VRS hesitant on light throttle

Featured Replies

I've just bought a 52 plate VRS in black metallic to go with my 52 plate Elegance TDI estate - but a few problems have come to light since purchase (isn't that always the way)

There was a problem with the central locking (just like I had on the Elegance) which I've fixed now, and a real smell of oil from the fan, which has all but disappeared.

But the most annoying thing right now is that the car splutters and stutters and dithers on very light throttle, and this had made it a pain to drive in slippy conditions. It still goes like stink on big throttle, but I'm trying to avoid that style of driving in the most part.

The other bit of info that might be related is that I cannot get it to do more than 37mpg on a run, even when I drive like the fella off Driving Miss Daisy.

I have had it hooked up to a Sun ODBC computer which reported no engine DTC's.

Any ideas would be really appreciated.

Cheers

Its look like you need to clean your throttle body. This is a regular problem with VAG cars like the VW, Seat, Audi.

Check VW Throttle Body Cleaning

Or Seat Throttle Body Cleaning

You will find a lot of info and DYI with pics explaining how to clean it very easy.

Make shure to take some pics of yours and post them here.

Good luck,

+1, had this with mine when I bought it, make sure you buy a replacement gasket.

Thanks for the replies people.

Just another piece of info to add to the mix here - when accelerating hard in 1st gear this morning the car suddenly lost power and the 'EPC' light came on the dash.

This was reset on stopping/starting up the car again, but the ASR light stayed on for some reason

is that a sign of a MAF problem? I'm sure someone will chime who know more than me.

1) Make sure to clean your Throttle Body

2) What you explain about suddenly loss power, sound like yor car went into LIMP MODE Also you can make a google search for Audi Limp Mode and Seat Limp Mode in order to get more info.

Limp mode is a 'reduced power' mode, that results from any number of potential engine problems like reduced fueling, N75 Valve operation, boost pressures being out of spec for a given period of time.......Etc, Etc

MINE STARTED DOING THIS ANY IDEA?

MINE STARTED DOING THIS ANY IDEA?

Doing what mate, stuttering or limp mode?

I know this is an old thread and the owner may no longer have a vRS, but Jesus, why did you buy a 1.8 turbo if you don't like to smash its flaps in every now and again and also moan that you can't get over 37mpg out of it??

True enough, I'm pleased with 37mpg on the overall average, only usually get more than that on the individual trip. I was just trying to figure out what dubDEAN is getting at. Properly dug this out the archive and there's loads of stuff on this subject.

STUTTERING :(

When is it happening?

Could be a million things but first off check the free, cheap and easy stuff.  Could be worth seeing if its thrown a code even if the light hasn't come on.

If its on part to mid throttle mucky throttle body is likely cause and an easy check and fix.  But don't rule out ignition (plugs, gaps, coils) or fuelling (pump, injectors), also things which may not throw a code but could show up with logs (air/fuel mixture, lambda readings/rich lean etc).

Could also be airflow or a leak after turbo...

Need more exploration and detail really.  What I would do is clean throttle body, replace gasket and get it realigned whether you unplug to clean it or not.  On wide open throttle the draggy residue in the throttle body has less effect so it will be less noticeable...clean it all up should help.  I left mine plugged in, unattached the body and had a plastic drip tray underneath, the Mrs stuck her foot on the throttle to open the flap.  I didn't have running issues, maybe a slight lumpiness on light throttle, but it still made a big difference.

You could check and gap your plugs, again a cheap easy check.  If your mapped they should be on 0.7mm, standard 0.8mm, the gap can open up over time and may cause an issue, especially if it happens unevenly across the cylinders........anyway, as we always say, do some cheap, easy checks first, while you're doing that see if you can get it scanned, you never know what the car may be trying to tell you until you plug it in.  To me it sounds like throttle body or a sparking issue...are your coil packs the revise ones?

I GOT GIDDY

new bosch maf , new bosch front lambda , new coolant sensor, new iat sensor , new injector seals as had slight leak, new fuel filter, cleaned throttle body, re alligned it too :)

runs bit better think lambda or maf were issue gonna swap plugs as will be well carboned up i think as was running pooooo

p.s not a fault code in sight  :(

Jeepers you've been busy. Might as well throw new plugs in as well then! I had platinum before, pretty good, on lazer iridium now slightly better I'd say and pre gapped to 0.7 ideal for a map.

You may find lambda reading was off because of a maf issue if that was the case, anyway glad you're getting there. Suppose if you fire the machine gun in the barrel you're bound to hit a fish!

NGK IRIDIUMS GOING IN :)
