Thinking about a second car

Featured Replies

Although we've enjoyed having our Mazda Bongo Campervan since getting the Boxster whenever we've been away and the weather has been nice or the roads have been good we have just wished we were in the Boxster so the Bongo will be going up for sale. We only really need one car most of the time, however the bongo has been excellent in the snow being 4wd and I've just left the Boxster tucked up safe in the Garage. So we're thinking of replacing the Bongo with something costing around £2-3k my current favourite is a Mk4 Golf V6 4motion as I've had a golf before and liked it alot and also have had a haldex equipped car which again I liked alot. I don't need economy or tuneability just something practical and nice to drive so it seems ideal, ideally I would want a 2000 plate car for cheaper tax and they come with Recaro seats (ideally I'd want them in leather too). From what I have seen the engine appears to be reliable with plenty of them hitting over 200k miles.

I just wondered what peoples thoughts were on these and if there are any alternatives I should consider. The car needs to be 4wd and of a similar quality but otherwise I'm open to ideas.

Do it :)

Sound theory, get on with it :)

Sounds like a plan Eddy, and I'm sure you'd have some tasteful tweaks in mind as well :D

Sounds spot on for what you want/need it for and for that budget can't think of anything else right now which fit your criteria. I might also check out Bora 4Motions too, if you can live without the Golf's hatch - the budget might also go further on one.

The V6 4 Motion wil be thirsty little devil so how about the MkV 4 motion TDI, although I'm not sure if they are obtainable in your budget range. 4 Motion Boras are quite rare but another good idea.

I have plenty of tweaks in mind and that's one of the reasons I would prefer a Golf for styling reasons, I do like the Bora though but at the moment there aren't any about.

That first one is a bit odd as it has Bora seats and missing history despite low miles which sugests to me it's a Cat C/D. I would still consider it but would need to do a bit of background research first. Second one seems ok but neither are my ideal colour.

I'm not concerned about fuel economy so would much rather have a petrol.

The man's asking about a lovely sounding VR6 and you're asking him to consider a... tractor? :giggle:

and a tractor with a starting price of £8k too! I'm not spending that much on a car that's not gonna get used. I want to pick one up as cheap as possible, not too concerned about condition/mileage as it will give me something to work on.

Do it, the VR6 is brilliant. Would have one at that price in a heartbeat if I had room in the garage.

After looking at a few on the internet I'm quite looking forward to getting something that I can modify.

I would like one in black with black leather Recaros and Xenons, however none of that is essential so I may end up with something different. I've also already started planning the mods!

What ever you do, Eddy....

All being well I'm picking the car up tomorrow, however it's not a Golf or Bora.
