I realise there's a bit of the bolted horse and stable door thing going on here, but I'm fed up with not being able to get my vRS out of my road on summer tyres.

I'm fully expecting there to be no snow at all by the time they turn up, but it's only January so likely to be cold for weeks yet.

I figure with climate change and the warnings of more extreme weather in the future, a purchase of a spare set of wheels will be worthwhile in the end.

mytyres.net can do vredestein or Nokian for about £500 along with some 16" steelies. :|

I've been reading though, and can't decide which is the better tyre to go for.

I am intending to put my 18" alloys with bridgestone potenzas back on in spring.

Is the Vredestein Snowtrac the better winter tyre, and the Nokian WR G2 a better all season tyre ?

Have Snowtrac 3's fitted to wifes Fabia and they have been exceptional so far this winter. Would definitely buy again. I chose on the basis that they came out top in the German ADAC 2009 Winter tyre test.

Have voted for the Nokian WR G2 as I have been running on these since Christmas week. Another Forum member recommended them and I have to agree they appear to be very good.

Unfortunately the Verdestein 205/55 R16 is not available with a Load Index of 94, this being the minimum recommended for the Yeti. Therefore my options are more limited.

Edit

realised I had not mentioned I'm using them as a winter tyre which I think they are, rather than an a All season.

I haven't got them no, I am going only on the test score and other opinions on forum posts here and elsewhere - it is what I am planning to put on my wheels but people are very complimentary about the Snotracks as well as Nokian and even Avon and Pirelli. Right now I would give my left arm for any of them as I can't even get out of the close !

Tell me about it !

Not funny any more.

I'd like to see how you can get mytyres.net to do a Vredestein Snowtrac3 or Nokian WR G2 for about £500 along with some 16" steel wheels.

I've tried and got nowhere near the £500 mark!

By my calculations at £126.40 a tyre plus £9.90 P&P = £545.20

From this link

I've tried that for my 1,8 TSi Elegance and it seems I can't have that because of the wrong PCD. It needs to be 5x112, not 5x100.

That's unless someone knows different!

Sorry, a little confused here. Are MyTyres also supplying the wheels for this?

If not I'm sure you can get some suitable 5x112 steel wheels, either from a lower spec Octy2/Golf 5 or 6/Jetta/Passat and then fit winters to those...

Steve

mytyres will supply the steel wheels for £545.20 delivered (based on Vredestein SNOWTRAC 3 205/55 R16 91H)

Just checked my invoice from November from tyremen.co.uk for 4 x Vredestein Snowtrac 3 205/55/R16 91H. This is the Skoda recommended winter tyre size and rating for Octy II, see user manual for conditions of fitting tyres with lower speed rating for winter.

unit price = £67.21 +VAT carriage = £12.04 +VAT Total 323.00 inclusive of VAT Then of course you have to get some steel wheels, I got SEAT Altea wheels from e-bay for £60 for four, but I guess they are in demand at the moment. Your best bet, if you want to be sure about not altering your car spec and thereby insurance complications is to go for VAG OEM wheels. Your dealer may be able to help source a set, but again as everyone has left it late and is after the same thing you may be better waiting until the summer when prices and demand come down and driving carefully on what you have.

Maybe we need to think about a Group buy from Skoda for 16" steel wheels?

PCD for Octy II is 5x112 and 5x100 for Octy I mine are 6J with ET50

Well I've yet to find them! :S

I did find this company www.Octimex.de but I've never heard of them, but they do them for around £553 inc delivery from Germany. Anyone used them?

Just find someone on eBay or one of the forums that started off with them, and then upgraded to alloys. They are out there :)

Steve

A certain Skoda dealer in Mansfield is selling 16" steels for Octavia on ebay for £52 each including delivery, bit expensive, probably becuase they have been reading this forum! I guess they might do a deal if you phone them direct, seems like they have quite a few in stock.

Just for info the part number quoted is: 8P060102703C

Yep, definitely - people have picked up 4x wheels for that :)

Or at least less than £100 generally...

And I suppose there could be more demand for them currently, as people all have the same idea about running a set of winter wheels.

Steve

I voted for the Nokians on the basis that I have them on my car and have don for the last week. I can honestly say that they have been fabulous. Not only in the ice and slush but also in deep and compacted snow when you get into the side streets. My driveway has about 4 or 5 inches of compacted snow on it and I've been getting in and out no problem. Tried driving my wife's Audi A3 out tonight and had an entirely different experience getting out of the driveway so obviously the Nokians have made a difference.

Bought them with steelies from mytyres.co.uk back in mid December when the snow first started
