Rear Wiper (again).

Featured Replies

Now that I get washer fluid coming out of the spray. It seems the thaw has screwed up my rear wiper motor...

It stopped on the way home today @ 30 degrees (looking from the rear). When I got home I lifted the arm and it seemed to work fine when not in contact with the glass. So as a precaution I sprayed WD40 on the electric connection and the motor as I could see water drips running down it...

Wll the WD40 flush the remaining water out, or am off to the nearest main dealer for a replacement part? I'm just annoyed as I finally got the rear hatch plastic cover fitted back on perfectly.

The water will most likely be inside the gearbox of the wiper motor, so you will need to take the whole assembly out, remove the cover from the gearbox, clean out all of the old grease and water and repack it. If you can get one, replace the O ring inside the plastic cover where the screen wash tube goes (the one that runs up the wiper shaft) otherwise it will just happen again - not one of VAGs best design ideas.

A new wiper motor assy is probably a better long term solution though.

As suggested you can't really repair these if water has attacked them. I repaired mine twice and they don't last long before they start playing up again.

A new one is a better option around £70 from dealers.

Thanks Both - would a 2nd hand one be ok, or is it a case of throwing good money away?

Unless you can tell that the motor was replaced recently, I wouldn't bother with 2nd hand as this is a very common failing and used ones seem to sell for nearly as much as new in many cases.

Great - it did one perfect wipe, then slowed on the return stuttered and stopped..... yet works when not in contact with the glass!!!

I'll leave it alone for now.

Replace the motor,i had the same problem with mine, stripping it & cleaning it etc only worked for a week,i fitted a secondhand one from a guy on here & its worked fine for the last 6months! :)

Are the easy to replace - I saw 3 or 4 nuts to undo - is the wiper arm attached to a spindle on the motor arm or by a nut as i couldn't work out how to get the arm off.

Easy to replace.

Your wiper arm will be a little different to mine, but I would imagine that if you lift the plastic cover up at the spindle end you will find the connector for the washer jet. Use a thin screwdriver to lever this upwards, do one side a little, then the other. Then undo the nut for the arm.

Once you have done this remove the trim inside the hatch and you will have three nuts (or four, can't remember which) to undo and the washer hose and electrical connector. That should be it.
