19" Wheels wrecking my arches :o(

Featured Replies

A while ago I fitted some new 19" x 8" x 35mm ET RS4 replica wheels on my Octy VRS Mk 1 with 235 x 35 x 19 tyres. The fronts are fine but the rears are catching on the arches over larger bumps or when fully loaded and at this rate I'm going to have no paint on tbe arches and no wheel arch liners.

The wheels were bought from Wheelbase and I gave them all the details of the car and was told that these wheels would fit perfectly but that's not the case. It wasn't so much of a problem until I moved house and now that I live in the wilds of Lincolnshire, the roads are as bumpy as all hell and I don't want to have to drive everywhere at 20mph. :(

Would fitting 225 width tyres make any difference or is it a matter of getting wheels with a bigger offset or getting 7.5 inch width rims?

Loads of you guys have got 19 inch rims on your Octy's by the look of it so someone out there must have the answer.......well that's what I'm hoping.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

225's has got to help a bit (the tread will be 10mm narrower than your 235's)

Really you need to get under the car when the wheels are on the ground (pit or ramp) and see how much clearance you have between the rear shock's and the tyres sidewall to see if a different ET would be better, another option is to get your arches 'rolled' to increase the clearance, this wont help the arch liners though.

Seems to be that most of the package wheel and tyre sellers only have 35mm ET wheels in 5 x 100 PCD. The clearance looks ok when the car is on it's wheels and unladen but when you start loading up the boot it's definitely scuffing the inside of the arches. I wanted to lower it as well but that's only going to make matters worse unless I make the suspension so hard that it shakes the fillings out of your teeth over every ripple in the road.

you need to put stiffer suspension on mate, I had the same trouble with 8j 18" 225 40 18

with a full load mate youll always scuff them, Ive sorted it by fittin weitecs. stiffer springs

How does it ride on the Weitecs? Is it bone jarringly hard or still got enough give in the suspension? Was it just the springs you changed or the shocks as well?

full coilovers mate, there is a def increase in stiffness. depending on how low you go. I went pritty low at first and it was ok but a bit choppy, then I raised by 10-20 mm and that made a hell of a diff. I am going up a bit more now to see what that does but if you keep it around std it is a nice ride, well I like it. not too choppy but not as soft as the std rig.

Thanks for the information. Sounds like I might be able to cure things with slightly narrower tyres and some coilovers then. What ET are the wheels on your car out of interest?

the R32 (new style) were et 35 and the TD ones I got on now are the same ET35 and I have only had it catch once when I had it set low and I had a full load of people and luggage in. since Ive raised it up it has never scrubbed.

Sounds like I won't have to ditch my wheels for something else after all then and I fancied doing something with the suspension anyway. I checked out your car on car domain and it looked smart on the R32 rims. Sure it looks good on the new ones too though.

Cheers for the advice. Much appreciated.

NP lol,

I did love the R32s but they were too heavy. mind you they were much better quality than the TD pro Race 1.2 I have, check my other posts mate and youll see why.

dont know whats happenin yet with them

i got 19" Audi RS4s with 235/35/19s and they dont rub on the back over bumps or anything.

Do you know what ET they were? 35mm just seem to kick the backs out too wide for the arches. Unless my tyres are weird. What make of tyres have you got on your rims?

I had the same thing. I ordered some 18" replica old style RS4 alloys from wheelworx to fit my car & they supplied me with 18"x8j et33 alloys. My fault for not stipulating the offset. They were slightly wider than the arches  & I wasn't sure on the look. In the end I fitted some Milotec wheel arch extensions which made the situation & the look of the car better

As for catching/rubbing, I never had any issues at all. It was lowered with Weitec springs & koni adjustable shocks all round.

couldnt tell u the et, there Khumo tyres i think, dont have them on at the moment. Waitin for all the snow/frost to go so the road salt dont mess them up

Hi

I run at 215/35/19, and was on 225/40/18

let me explain that. Most important is that you have significantly raise the overal diameter of the tire.

You are running on 25.5", and to remind you that 225/40/18 has only 25.1" and I run those on 7.5x18 et 38!!!

Now I have 8x19 et 35-meaning wider wheel and smaller ET instead of being bigger!!! Thann I used wheel converter

http://www.onlinecon..._conversion.htm

with the purpose to make tire smaller in OD, and I did it from 25.1 to 24.9" and you did go for even bigger one 25.5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Return the tires to the idiot who has sold them to you!!!

I run on the Super racing D2 track coils and even on track racing coils 225/35/19 (25.2) or 215/40/19 (25.8) will be to high.

JUST SIMPLY CHANGE THE TIRES FOR 215/35/19 AND YOU WILL NOT HAVE THOSE PROBLEMS ANY MORE.

RECCOMEND FALKEN FK452.

Hope this has helped.

I knew I was making the tyres taller overall but figured that the main thing to consider was the overall width. I'm thinking you're right about 215 wide tyres though because basically that will take 10mm off both the inside and the outside of the tyre and 10mm narrower off the outside of the tyre has got to aid clearance between the tyre and the arch in a big way. It's good to know that you're running 8" rims @ 35mm ET with 215 tyres and not having clearance issues. Looks like a new set of tyres and revised suspension are the order of the day....the tyre fitter is going to curse me when he tries to fit such titchy sidewalls over the rims though emoticon-0140-rofl.gif Do 215 tyres end up looking like stretch tyres on 8" rims or do they look ok?

Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.

I think 215 are the minimum recommended for 8" width mate, and 235 max or pos 245. they will be fine mate. I have a feeling it will be expensive for 215 35s tho.

Just checked on Blackcircles.com and Falken FK-452's are going to be £110 each delivered and my local tyre fitter charges £10 each for fitting, balancing, a new valve and disposal. All the tyres I can get in that size seem to only have load ratings of 85 though. Shouldn't be a problem though should it?

Ask dady for the best price

here it is FK452 215/35/19

for £84.50 inc.VAT

http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m55b0s76p6226

That is 100gbp less per 4 tires compared to the price above!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guys don't let us from Croatia teach you where are the best prices in UK ;) :p

As for the streched look, I'll make a picture and post it here, but for experienced eye it is a little streched, but

I prefeer that over arch rubbing.

That's a good price for sure and the saving is very worth having. If anyone has got a photo of a 215 width tyre on an 8" rim it would be good to see just how stretched it looks before spending out on a full set of tyres. Thanks to everyone for their advice and help thus far. Much appreciated. Friendly bunch ain't ya ? ;)

Davor,

Have you ever had any probs with hard cornering? they look like they would come off in a hard corner.

nice rims tho mate,

HI BILLY

NO HAVEN'T HAD SUCH A PROBLEMS, BUT I RACE ON 16 AND 17"

BUT ON STREET HARD CORNERING NO PROBS, MOST OF THE PROBLEMS ARE

WHEN CLIMBING THE CAR YOU HAVE TO HIT IT WITH THE WHEEL AT DULL ANGLE

NOT SHARP ONE BECAUSE TIRE DOESN'T PROTECT THE WHEEL RIM ENOUGH

THOSE ARE TSW LAST ONE FOUND ON EBAY (NOT ANY MORE IN PRODUCTION)

PAID FOR SET OF FOUR 250GBP LOL

change ET or tyres

Switching to 225 or 215 will already make a difference

If you have ET35 you should go for 7,5" wheel-width, if you have 8" width best is to have ET42... strange ET indeed but it fits like a glove and the wheels sit 7mm more in the arches which makes a huge difference. A friend of mine has exactly the same setup (18x8 with 225/40 tyres) but he has ET35 and suffers from rubbing when loaded heavily. I have no rubbing issues what so ever.

Cheers
