First 500 miles on a CR110 FWD

Featured Replies

Did my first fill up with diesel today. The computer showed 42 mpg and my calculation full to full was 44 mpg. I am quite pleased with that.

Overall I am extremely pleased with the car. It's quiet (by my standards) hardly any wind noise and tyre noise (on Dunlop SPs) seems to wholly depend on the road surface and is not obtrusive. It's the lack of wind noise that amazes me, after all it is a box travelling through the air not some sleek aerodynamic body. I only noticed today the seals between the side doors. These cut out the gaps that that must make a big difference to noise. The mirrors don't seem to produce any wind noise either.

Having bought an SE I did not pay extra for the Lumbar Support. I haven't missed it, seats are comfortable.

I have now survived two trips to a garden centre and only had to get "creative" once. Bought a small 5' high plastic vertical cold frame (can't call it a greenhouse). Folded up one rear seat and in it went.

I haven't yet checked whether a front seat backrest will fold sufficiently to be able to get something really long down into the footwell. That's the next challenge.

I am amazed how well the CR110 engine pulls. Elsewhere some torque curves were published and that flat curve (!!!) from about 1500 revs really shows. I haven't pushed it yet, still running in, but it certainly feels faster than my previous 110bhp Passat.

The reversing sensors are such a boon. Suddenly I feel more confident reversing. It's nice to have an audio helper to remind you how close you are really getting to an object behind you.

Also washed it for the first time, I'm not used to such a high roof. Had to get a beer crate out of the garage to get up there.

I've not carried that many passengers (other than SWMBO) but those who have been in it have been impressed. The next test is the mother in law. A little old lady who found it difficult getting out of the Passat. She will now probably find it difficult getting into this one. I might have to make a small step for her that will then fit in the footwell.

Thanks for the review Tom,

pleased to hear your enjoying the Monster experience. Know what you mean about washing the roof; bought a plastic step from Wilco's in town, just the job. :)

A couple more things.

When pulling out from a side road at an angle where you really have to look back to see oncoming traffic those wide B pillars do get in the way.

It's a lean forward/look back job. Would hate to do it if I had a neck problem, although opening the window would probably make it easier.

I haven't worked out how to tell whether the doors automatically lock when you build up speed. I haven't heard anything. Is this a setting on the Maxidot?

Hi Tom,

I have mine set for door locking and you can hear them lock shortly after setting off and obviously unlock when you stop and get out. The door locking switch near the 12v socket should also light up if there locked.

Setting this function is via Maxidot if I remember correctly.

The Yeti is certainly the car of the people - even the vertically challenged! I find that I have to clip the drivers seat in a more forward position to operate the clutch pedal correctly - a first for me at 6'2".

The auto door locking is on the Maxidot and can be disabled. I leave it on as it auto unlocks when an inside handle is pulled or the key removed AND (according to the manual) when I have a crash. - Cheers!!

Please do us a favour - Don't test the crash situation.

Hi Tom

My 110 FWD is showing 42.6mpg average after 300 miles, very impressed so far

This is an unfair comparison, but this morning my 2.0 TDI 170 returned 50 mpg over 50 miles of driving in snow - gently A type road with a few roundabouts, average speed 50 mph.

My guess is that the 2.0 TDI engines at more or less constant speed will have the same fuel economy.

My average, measured from tank to tank in daiy driving is around 44 mpg. Rural, no hills, a few roundabouts and a few small villages. Daily short trip in the morning to deliver SWIMBO to the bus - 6 mile round trip - really buggers it up!

The big test will be a week from now: around 2500 miles from DK to Southern Spain. My Octy did that at 43 mpg for the trip - including some ton plus sections in Germany. Average speed when moving, as reported by GPS was 105 km/hr = 66 mph. For the Snowmonster, 40 mpg will be a pass grade, 42 excellent as I see it.

Hi Agerbundsen,

also get similar readings for my fuel consumption, although running on the smaller 205/55's readings are a bit generous at the moment.

just a quick thought are you going down to Southern Spain with your Goodyear's winters fitted? Be an interesting temperature range for them, according to the BBC currently DK - 8 and Southern Spain +16.

Anyway have a safe trip.

I really have no choice other than driving on what I have. They are required in Germany, Switzerland and some of the parts of France I come thorough both down and back in March. I did it the last two years on Goodyear 7+ versins in the Octy, and they worked just fine. We also like to toodle around in the Sierra Nevada and other mountainous areas down there, and snow at the higher elevations is no unheard of. Last year in leon, they got 10 inches f snow in an hour one morning - I think i was the only car with winters on, so a poor Leon behind me cracked his front bumper on my trailer hitch. I stopped - he couldn't. I also ran into the aftermath of a Hurricane between Bordeaux and Bilbao and a snowstorm in the passes between Leon and Oporto, so winter tyres are not the bad choice.

Thanks Agerbundsen,

hopefully this time round the weather will be more kind and the driving is less eventful other than enjoying the Monster experience.

By coincidence there was an article in our Saturday paper that mentioned snow in Catalonia and it's effects on a farming family. They reported that 18" fell overnight.

Filled up for the second time today.

447 miles and full/full worked out at 44mpg.

The computer shows 43.1 to date overall.

What I forgot to mention is that I run with the aircon on all the time. So these figures could be bettered.

I live in a rural area and journeys are a mixture of 3-5 miles and 25 miles with the occasional longer run.

Hi

can any body help with explaining average miles per gallon as mine seems to vary a lot .

It will start out showing 15/18 miles to gallon then slowly changes the longer your journey so after about 30 min of running it will be showing 40/44 mpg.But next day it will start back at 15/18 mph

I thought it recorded an average mpg since you started using the car unless it was reset to zero? .

The consumption figure changes as I would expect depending on how you are driving up hill or down etc.

Perhaps I don't understand what it is meant to mean or perhaps there is a setting in maxidot :(

Any help would be appreciated

There are two ranges -#1 is since you started driving this time - within 2 hours of having sopped. Sounds like that is what you are on.

#2 is averaging since you reset it, but limited to (I think) 99 hours of not driving betwen starts.

You can see which by the little number in the display and change it by pressing the button on the indicator stalk on the side closest to you - not on the end.

As the mileage always starts from zero on #1 the mpg will start low but, as the number of miles increases, the average will increase. The system sums the instantaneous mpg. The smae applies to #2 but sums over a longer time period.

Hi Agerbundsen

Thanks that was great been trying to figure it out for weeks. Why did I not ask the experts on Briskoda !!

Mine has the little rotating wheel on the steering wheel so soon realised that I just had to press it to change the selection.

My average is showing as 43.6 mpg over 1600 miles compared to just short of 45 mpg when I last did a brim to brim check .

If all else fails, read the manual :)

Glad to be of service.
