Bit of a brief background. April 2008 I bought a Fiat Grande punto 1.4 T-Jet on 0% finance. This was before I started working a new job which involves a lot of motorway miles and this is where the issue is, the T-Jet fuel consumption is horrific.

Therefore I have been looking at switching to a diesel and the VRS TDI has caught my eye, both by its looks and the price/current deals on offer.

My question is, what would be the best deal I could expect if I went in to the dealer. I'd be looking at p/x my current car and getting the VRS on the tax free/4.2% apr deal. I would assume this doesn't give me much room for whealing and dealing? I'd hope to be offered between 7000-7500 for my t-jet, its got 18000 on the clock and is a decent spec with leather seats and a few extras and is in a decent condition on the whole. There is around 4500 left to pay, so would give me around 3000 and then i'd be looking at putting another 3/4000 on to that to make up about a 7000 deposit. This would then be around 10000 to pay over 36 months.

Is there much room for getting any discount from the 17000ish asking price?

Basically my ideal scenario is to be offered 7500 for the t-jet, get the vrs for 16500 and just transfer the finance over. I'm not looking for many extras so there may even be one that suits at the dealer or can source one from around the UK rather than being a factory build order.

Am I being a bit optomistic here?

Plenty of room! Check out drive the deal for the best deal and try and get your local dealer to match it :)

Try drivethedeal.com and webuyanycar.com for the price of a new car and a price you might expect part ex of your current car. A few people on here have used drivethedeal to buy there's, you get about a 22% discount so you may have room for a few extras. I think they put you in touch with a dealer and you can arrange your finance with them but I'm not too sure.

Surely the drivethedeal is only useful for cash buyers though? As the dealer will just say "well drive the deal can't provide the same finance offers we can". The quote on drive the deal was 16320 including race blue paint and mats but their finance offer is very poor compared with the one Skoda offer.

Or am I missing something here?

Sorry, don't know the answer to that I'm afraid, hopefully someone on here can help with that, I'd be interested to know myself. I think they can put you in touch with a dealer and then you work out your finance with them but I'm not sure.

skinner05 - I went to all the Skoda dealers around West Yorkshire (DM Keith's) and none of them could match or beat the drivethedeal price. They gave me the usual cr*p about drivethedeal not being able to offer the same Skoda finance deals compared to them.

Drivethedeal can either offer you their own finance deals or let you use the the one's that Skoda are offering when they pass the order to the Skoda dealer that is offering the deal.

Once you have placed the order the Skoda dealer will then pass you finance request to Skoda and someone will call you and arrange this over the phone.

I found the whole process straight forward. Only two things: Drivethedeal don't do Part Exchanges and if you are taking the finance then you need to pick the car up person as they need you to confirm your ID for the finance deal. I didn't find this an issue.

You can use DtD and get all the same finance deals as if you had gone to the dealer direct i.e. 0% fiance with 50% deposit etc.

I know this for sure as I have just ordered mine through them and gone with the 0% over 2 years with a 50% deposit.

Try taking the Fiat back to the dealer and ask how much they'll give for it, or as others say, webuyanycar. The DtD price is the lowest you'll get in general, so you might still gain even if you loose more on the Fiat buy not p/xing.

I got £500 more by selling my previous car myself (to an indy dealer), and I saved around £2k by using Dtd versus getting riped off by a dealer. Plus I got the 0% and VAT free.

Out of interest those who have been around the dealers, what was the best price you got them down to? (what options did that include)

I could do with going part exchange as I wouldn't want to run the risk of ordering the vrs and then failing to sell my punto privately.

I guess i'd be fairly happy to do a deal on 17000 for the vrs and 7250 px on my punto, but i'm not sure if any dealers will be up for it.

I think you are being slightly hopeful on the value of the Punto. A quick look on Autotrader and there are cars retailing for around £7500. You should still have some equity in it though.

At the end of the day its about the total deal.

The PX value of your car.
The price of the VRS
The cost of the finance.

Its going to take some legwork on your part to get the deal youre happy with.

I put the last post before i saw this. Which dealer did you take it to?

I'm a bit new to all this really, so will the fiat garage happily just buy it back off me (obviously at a price which suits them)?

I would recommend you ring Jeremy Taylor or Steve Cantrell at RAINWORTH Skoda of Mansfield. Myself & 2 other members on this forum purchased from them just before Xmas
& they just about matched Drive the deal. Well worth a call. Good luck.

I just took it to a guy who knows a friend of mine and he made an offer which was better than the p/x dealers offered me.
