Engine Management Light On...

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

After a bit of help if possible please...

Engine management warning light came on this morning on the way to work (Octavia VRS petrol, MKII), car felt fine but thought I'd get it checked out. One of the other guys here has an A3 and has got a copy of VAG COM (version 409-1, a pretty basic one I think) so we ran a scan. The lead is marked 'OBD II' I think, fitted perfectly into the port and the green light on the lead came on. For each module it tried 4 scans before moving onto the next one which seemed a bit odd.

The auto-scan result is shown below:

Then tried a direct scan of the engine module (01) and this was returned.

This is the first time I've used the software and I'm not familiar with it, but it seems like it's not connecting properly?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Adam

Is it a genuine lead?

Not sure why you should get an error after a successful auto-scan, but I spent a while hunting a 'phantom' engine management light which turned out to be an incipient fault with the coolant temperature sensor. The only way I tracked it down was by doing a scan when the light WASN'T on, when there was a 'pending' fault code stored. If it goes away and never comes back, it might well have been a spurious reading... :)

It's not, cheapo eBay jobber I think! The VAG COM is a shareware version too...

The lead/software seem to work though, between them they successfully detected a faulty Lamda sensor on the A3 they were used on before, and the software was able to remove the warning light once it had been replaced.

Yeah, the error appeared first and then did the scan later... Thanks for that, will keep an eye on it, cheers!

Of course - good point! Looks like your auto-scan actually failed, rather than coming back with no results...

Well that clears that up, thanks for your help everyone. Looks like my first dabble in VAG COM was destined to fail from the start :giggle:

Over to the group buy thread I go...

Cheers again,

Light has gone off now :wonder:

I was low on fuel when it appeared, but after I filled the tank again it's gone. Could it have been something to do with poor quality fuel (the dregs) going through?

Have arranged to go and see mikeholroyd (thanks!) today for a scan, will report back...

Went to see Mike earlier and he did a scan for me (huge thanks Mike!).

The 'error' turned out to be a momentary loss of fuel pressure and all seems to be fine thankfully... There were also a few other small issues (including a new relay being required for the headlight washers - I hadn't realised they weren't working) that were brought up and I even got my seatbelt bong removed and both rear fog lights turned on :D What an amazing bit of kit!

Thanks again to everyone who has helped
