Alternator Replacement

Featured Replies

Undo battery leads, or at least the negative one and pull lead away from battery

Remove engine cover, the one with the badge on it, not the rocker cover

Remove the earth lead and connector block from rear of the alternator

Undo the viscous cooling fan, allen key from behind in the alloy case it attaches to, you will need to over tension the drive belt to stop it slipping while you undo the key

Using iirc a 17mm spanner, lever the tensioner over the other way to slacken the drive belt and pull it off the alt pulley, then remove the fan bolt

Drop fan into fan housing

Undo the two bolts holding the alternator and remove it

Replace alternator and refit the fan

Put the drivebelt back on and tension it so you can tighten the fan key back up fully

Leads back on the alternator

Final checks and put the cover and battery back on.

Hello from your description it sounds like you removed it from the top. I'm pretty sure on a MK2 it can only be done from underneath. Can you please clarify as I'm about to change mine and your way seems much easier
