Shark Fin Installation Tutorial

Featured Replies

This tutorial is for an Mk2 Octavia but i would imagine the process is similar in other models.

Also usual disclaimer

Ok here is the OEM shark fin Antenna - Part no. 1K0 035 507 J

To install this firstly remove the trim from the C pillar and then across the back of the rear windscreen. Oh and that's not muck on the headlining its cos my hands are dry etc from this week so its actually my skin  oh and it was raining hence the wet bit as one hand was wet.

Carefully then pull the headlining down to reveal the bolt holding the antenna in.

Now all you do is undo this bolt (you require a 22mm socket/spanner). Disconnect the wire. Put the other antenna in its place. Connect the wire and fasten up the bolt. Remember only do it up hand tight then half a turn.

End result is

When finished. Carefully return headling back and re attach trim. Took me all of 20 mins and that was taking pics aswell.

Does the trim on the C pillar just pull off Carl?

Nicely done. It's tutorial central today! :D

Grab an overall car shot as well, when you get chance...

No there is a screw under the central trim. However you don't need to undo it as you are only moving it enough to remove the headlining

Will do

You pleased with it? How much was the part from VW?

Part was a shade under £35

I am pleased with the look. As for reception ermmmm i kinda let the battery go dead so it's on charge and will find out tomorrow what it's like.

I can't see there being any problem as i took both the old and new antenna apart to look at the insides and the both look the same.

I'm guessing it's very similar for the GPS shark fin save for routing the aerial to the back of the MFD3?

I never listen to the radio really, so it's purely cosmetic on my part.... :)

And yes, similar to the GPS unit. That version has a larger front section though, to house the GPS receiver.

I'm not so sure. I asked about that when i rang up to order the part. However i was told that because my MFD3 was retro-fit the car wouldn't have the correct wiring so i would have to buy the cable to route it to the satnav.

So i just stayed with my Hockey Puck and went for the standard Am/Fm aerial

Me neither really. But would be handy if it works or TMC is pointless :giggle: :giggle:

Makes sense - refreshing for a parts department ;)

I look out the window at work to a Golf Pirelli with the GPS shark and it's not a very good looking bit of kit, so probably best avoided. Looks awkward and the design an afterthought. I had a quick Google for a photo to compare, but couldn't immediately find one. So stick with the Puck!

Well that's saved me £67.10, a Saturday morning and a lot of swearing!

This is the Newer Shark Fin with GPS

Ugly IMHO

This is the old one (note the second cable)

IMG_0016-2.jpg

No different to the Size/shape of mine. Just the Gubbins inside and the extra wire which would be redundant until you ran a cable all the way to the Satnav

Carl

Yep, its that first one on the Pirelli Carl - sorry, was being dumb and forgot it also had a proper beesting aerial coming out of it! :dull: - kinda defeats the object in my mind...

I can't see why they had to change it TBH

Maybe it was cheaper to screw in the old style antenna.

But if i had OEM GPS i would have ordered the second picture one.

Carl

Be interesting to know what the reception is like, because I've got a couple of cars with knackered amplifier circuits that I'm going to attend to soon.

If it works as well as the old one for FM and AM then that's a bonus as it's one less thing sticking up on the car.

I think I saw something about the radio reception being affected and they went for the new, wonderful style. Don't know the detail behind that though, and whether there's truth/science in the reasoning. All I know is that it looks awful!

Is that affect only when combined with the GPS or is it generally useless in the sharkfin?

If it is then i will be taking the gubbins out of the old Antenna and swapping them about.

But on looking at the two of them inside they seem the same so cant see what would go wrong with just the AM/FM one. M

Maybe they had to change the GPS one due to the GPS puck taking up the room in the old one so a smaller FM/AM amp was used ( im only surmising their )

Nope, just the combined model Mark - hence why VeeDub now fit the 'orrible one! That's the reason I got anyway.

The radio-only model should be pretty much identical in reception to the existing one.

Good to know then as I'll price them both up ad if they cost the same might just get the stubby one.

I get awful AM anf not great FM at the moment too, so my worry was along the lines of much shorter rod to put the wire into for the aerial.

I'll have to have a look and see if I can't negotiate anything off with a dealer for one of these :)

Bit of an Update

The Radio reception is Spot on. No different (well not sat outside my flat) to the OEM antenna

Here are a couple of daylight pics further back

Carl

The new Superb2 combined GPS/AM/FM aeiral is just a shark fin with no additional antenna, maybe that would fit the octy better.

Well i seem to have been a bit premature on the signal quality of the Shark Fin

It seems as soon as i leave my drive it no longer works.

Going to ensure i connected it up properly then will have to take apart and see if i can swap gubbins over from old to new

Alternatively any idea if you can buy a signal booster?
