EGR delete

Featured Replies

Which is the best EGR delete pipe? I know the cel light will come on but will the car run badly befor i get the light mapped out?

As long as it's properly made, it doesn't matter who makes it. Allard is the most well-known/popular one. The car will run fine with it fitted, the only thing you'll get is the light on and a more pronounced shudder on shutdown, as you loose the anti-stall/anti-shudder properties of the EGR system.

What benfits will it give, not too keen on the allard one as it has a takeoff for a boost gauge and i don't really want to run one.

Saves the EGR mechanism gunking up and sticking/leaking.

The EGR system recirculates some of the already burnt exhaust gasses back to the intake, to reduce combustion temps. So removal will keep your intake manifold a lot cleaner, but ultimately it's your call :)

Oh, and they're available without the boost gauge option...

Do it the cheap and easy way. Remove the vacuum hose to the EGR and blank it off with a golf tee. EGR will never open so job done.

Hmmmm dunno.... sounds a bit Pikey to me!!:giggle:

Not really mate. Best option for a BLT engine, as the ASV is a separate unit and motor controlled. Allard pipe is stupid money for what you get. If you buy three golf tees, you can use the other two, to put your balls on when your driving.

Bump...!

Just a couple of follow on questions, cel light will come on after egr delete has been fitted, could one switch that fault off using vagcom?

Is this advisable has any/many done it? :wonder: Was thinking I could give this 'pikey mod' a go and see if I like it before I fork out the bucks on a proper one :D but using a Tee sound a bit far-fetched..........

Yep did this 4 weeks ago.

No problems so far apart from a silly yellow light on dashboard!

err didnt use a golf tee though, just a raw plug and a bit of plastic to cover it.

Great, thanks for the reply, Im guessing after removing the silicon hose im blocking both the silicon hose and bit it does into..? Any difference in performance/smog/economy?

The small hose is just hanging down, venting to air.

The bit the hose went into is blocked.

Ive noticed a difference is repsonse but then i have done the lephant hose mod and egr mod at the same time so unsure which has had the effect.

Economy is better, smog don't know, seems ok!

What i need to know is should i get the egr light blanked out asap or at least get it vag commed... am i making problems for myself leaving this light on the dashboard?

The CEL light is simply on as the ECU is detecting incorrect EGR flow rates. Nothing bad will happen, unless of course a serious fault happened in which case with the light always on, you wouldn't know something had gone wrong. You can have the light mapped out for EGR flow with VAGCOM, or buy a tuning company,

Excellent, thanks guys. shall do the egr mod today then, RE PCV elephant hose mod... cant seem to find the guide or more info on it atm.. will keep hunting, but if anyone has a link handy it would be great :)

Edit: found it - http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/100913-diy-guide-the-elephant-hose-ccv-catch-can-mod/page__hl__elephant%20hose%20mod

lol after a bit of reading I need some supplies! shall have a hunt for some..

I would block the hose too. it is trying to draw a vacuum and will pull crap in to the vacuum system. ( including the feed for the brake servo !! )

done and done, not cel light up yet but shall go now for test drive, let you know how it goes..

ps how air tight does it need to be? because I only used a plastic plug and eletrical tape..

Edit: Back now, umm cel light not lit up yet.. does this mean I've done it wrong? :giggle:

literally things I can find.. shall neaten it up when I know its 100% correct

Ok so went for a short drive, seemed smoother, but it seemed less urgent than before.. no gunk spillage though ;)

Yea same happened to me, i thought great i havent got the CEL light problem but after 30 miles it came on.

If you reattach the hose it eventually goes away.

Ive kind of got used to it though but will get it mapped out if i can find soemone around Colchester to do it.

I think the engine management only looks for EGR changes when cruising.

If you hoof it around all the time I don't think the EGR will kick in much so the engine management will not register a fault.

ive had the elephant hose mod on my furby vrs for around 3/4 of a year, no CEL light at all though, what does this mean?!

That's the PCV breather mod, which does not cause a CEL.

Cel light on now :p least I know I've done the right thing.. Now..! vagcom to switch it off.. is that straight forward? I have the demo version plus the china brand cable, it can read diagnostics but I dont think it can do much else..

i decided to do this mod too, tbh it seemed a bit slower, less 'pokey'

dunno if its in my head or if its actually effected it, has everyone else experienced this?

I felt that too, but it could simply be that its smoother so doesn't notice as much...? that's my take anyway.. mayb the ecu needs resetting to readjust settings?

Did anyone else have this?

yea i did think maybe you need to drive it for a few hundred miles for the ecu to adapt to the change of air mixture, but thats only a guess really..

any idea's would be good ;)

cheers

Just dissconnect the battery for 10 mins or so and let the ECU re-set when it is re-connected.
