Turbo Whistle whilst on Boost..

Featured Replies

Hello people,

I am a little curious to find out if my car has a problem?

The Turbo whistles whilst on boost, I have owned the car for nearly 2 weeks, it was pulling like a train before, but now when on boost it seems that the turbo is working but the boost dosent feel like its coming in as it should..

No Engine management light

EGR Valve - Clean

Intercooler pipers connected - Checked

Oil Changed - So cant see the oil veins to the turbo clogged

Air filter changed

Have any of you experienced this problem? I feel like some kind of pipe is not connected, as it only whistles whilst on turbo it feels like the turbo comes in at 2500 rather than 1800 rpm, but im new to the turbo world so I need some help please?

Worth making a trip to the garage but if its an easy fix I would rather DIY?

Thanks again

Does sound like a boost leak somewhere, because ( a ) you're hearing it louder than before and ( b ) the power has gone. The power coming in later is also a clue, because the inlet isn't perhaps getting any pressure until the turbo has spooled up more and working harder.

I'm sure one of the Fabia massive will point you in the right direction, I would check the intercooler hoses are connected nicely first though because (might be wrong here..) I'm sure I've heard of a few fabia's doing this. Have a browse through the Fabia section and I'm sure there are a few threads that might help.

Boost leak for sure. Can be hard to find as it only takes a pinhole in the intercooler or pipework to cause it. Properly equipped garage can do a pressure test of the system.

Thanks for the replys.. I assume its not a common issue as I only have 2 replys :giggle:

Is it safe to carry on driving the car?

There is no engine managemnt light on the dash as yet..

So im assuming it will run fine, the idle is nice and stable as well, please can any of you advise any further?

Another possible cause is the VNT may be sticking slightly, or the vacuum hose to the N75 valve may be leaking. If the VNT isn't moving to the correct position for the boost demand, the turbo will whistle, as the turbine blades will be at the wrong angle for the gas flow.

Not a valid assumption; unless we've something to add, a lot of us won't post just to say "I agree" or similar.

If you're losing boost, you'll probably be over-fuelling, but the worst that can happen with a TD is that you get a bit of black smoke and worse fuel consumption.

The boost is there but not as torquey as it was, as it reaches 2500rpm there is a slight kick rather than 1800rpm.

There is no smoke other at start up (Cold Mornings) and MPG with the diesel prices its getting about 45+

Feels about as quick as my Yaris T Sport right now :(

Sorry to sound slow but what is the black ball located infront of the engine bay behind the dip stick?

Also where would I located the N75 valve and and what is a VNT?

Thanks again..

VNT - Variable Nozzle Turbocharger, also known as a V Vane T (V V T). The VVT bit is a set of pivoting vanes in the exhaust manifold to turbine wheel passage in the exhaust turbine casing which direct the gas onto the turbine wheel at different angles according to gas speed, bringing you on boost earlier.

If you've got stuck with your in a "high speed" setting, it's the first case I can remember hearing of.

The default condition for this turbocharger is maximum boost. As the engine speed increases the exhaust flow across the turbine is reduced. More vacuum means less boost not more.

KenONeill is correct when he says that the most common fault is turbo overboost. A vacuum leak would cause an overboost.

Most likely cause is a faulty N75 valve (stuck open). There are two solenoid valves on the rear bulkhead. One goes to the EGR valve and the other (N75) goes to the vacuum capsule that is part of the turbo. I've also seen low boost when the vacuum tube from the N75 to turbo was pinched holding the vacuum.

Where is the N75 Located please on a fabia vrs??

has it got a standard exhaust? as ive got a milltek and mine makes a whistle sound

It's part of the vacuum control block beside the brake master cylinder, black box mounted on the inner wing top.

standard exhaust, the whistle sort of turns into a woosh when getting to 2500 but the torque feeling is not there, although the turbo is working, its not boosting how it should :|

mine makes this noise aswell going to smoke test my car at work in the next few days so ill let u know the results. boost leak makes sense as the air leak will explain the whistling and the loss of boost. mine started awhile after i had the car remapped so big chance it could be one of the clips on the boost pipes

Whereabouts in Manchester are you? Could look at running a full VCDS scan to see if anything's been logged, and possibly do some data logging while out on a run, to see if an issue can be identified.

Hi im in Oldham - There is no engine management light or engine judder, no smoke just a whistle on boost it revs fine all the way to 3500 or more but with hardly 300nm of torque

I some how managed to replace the glow plugs last night what a struggle modified tool :giggle:

My local garage checked it last night and said that its not a vaccum leak checked the intercooler pipes all connected up they said drive it until it drops a fault on the management light - I dont want to end up blowing the engine if its a risk

I have also noticed when I clean under the EGR Valve the saucer shaped object ontop of the intake manifold if its an EGR Valve? it has a small hole visible I cleaned it from outside as it had some oil coming out not at pressure just like a few drips, took it to work this morning under hard acceleration and checked the hole has abit more oil coming out of, I dont know if this is normal? surley if I let it conintue to drip oil out of the small hole it will leave a mess eventually

I was frustrated if it was just me being paranoid on a private road asked my mate in his Mondeo 2.0 TDCI 130 Bhp to have run with me I was keeping up with him but he had the edge of 1 car distance but the weight difference of a mondeo is 1500+ so I know I should have over took it with ease

Fair enough. I just wondered about checking for actual fault codes. You could possibly have something not quite right, without the engine management light being on.

Requested and actual boost levels could also be measured with VCDS (VAG-COM), while out on a run.

yeh drop a post in here with the update please if you figure it out..

will do mate im only in hyde so if i figure mine out we can have a play see what we can find

I wouldn't worry about that, most of the EGR valves leak a bit..

  • 2 weeks later...

hi i was wondering if any one could help me basically i have a pd100 polo and replaced the turbo and intercooler with that of the vrs. now im having a problem with the car boosting, i have to press and release the accellerator many times to get some boost into it and then it will move, otherwise its as fast as a 1.0litre micra.

theres no leaks with the actuali pipes but there is an airy sound comming from the turbo i think, its not a whistle its more airy. i also get a whistle from the exhaust, howevere it is decated and remapped so some whistle is normal.

Theres no play in the turbo itself so i dont no what it is. im pretty new to this n75 concept so can any one explain it to me, and how may be able to fix it

thank you

I had a similar problem on Nissan 2.2 TDI when it was new.It turned out to just be a loose pipe connection !! which only took 5 mins to fix

.Hope yours is similar.

Best uf luck
