Is this a wheel bearing gone or not

Featured Replies

Basically i seem to have a problem with the car.

When driving along say from about 50mph onwards there is a low constant droning noise which i think is a wheel bearing.

I can't seem to locate where it is so am going to get it checked out by the garage but just wondering if thats what it was.

It has only just started, well about half way up north after JKM on saturday,

I made sure it wasn't the engine by dipping the clutch etc.

It only seems noticeable over 50mph.

Any idea roughly how much it would be to get done at a dealer and is this covered under warranty? I have until the 25th March left on the warranty so if it can be done under that i'd like to get it done that way

Cheers folks

It could be, or a stone under a dust shield is actually more likely. If the car's still under warranty, get a dealer to have a look/listen.

It's not a rattle though its more of a constant drone/whirr noise

Carl, have you checked the inside edge of the rear tyres are not 'sawtoothing'? (going into the shape of a 50p).

This is a very common thing on the MK5 Golf and MKII Octavia (same chassis) and sounds just like a wheel bearing has gone.

Trust me. I've had a stone under a disc shield more than once; they don't rattle (if they did they could just fall out unless they're stuck in the caliper), and can sound like a wheel bearing.

Had this on my golf twice - for me it was the tyre thing. A new set of boots cured the problem. It DOES sound just like a bearing, however with a bearing you normally get more of a noise when turning left/right dependent on which one is failing, plus the tyre noise you only get at speed where a bearing you normally get at all speeds.

Annoyingly in both cases it meant swapping tyres that were still ok in terms of tread depth.. however i'd had a lot of miles out of them so not soo bad i suppose. The "cure" for this is to avoid it in the first place - ie rotate your tyres.

I went through a massive puddle and suddenly gained a terrible droning noise like a failing wheel bearing, turned out to be a stone wedged in the F/N/S brake heat shield

Funnily enough I noticed a similar noise coming from the back of my car this morning - only seemed to do it at 60+. I hope it's not tyre wear as the car's only 2 months 5000 miles old! I'll be checking for stones if it's still doing it tonight.

Same Here !

noticed it yesterday on way back from the airport, going to check the inside edge of the rears, mine has also done 5,000,

Anyone know what the latest Camber/toe settings are for the rear ?

It will almost certainly be rear tyre wear, stepped wear at that.

What is the mileage? Mine became really noticeable around 20k. Though this should apply to the mileage on the set of tyres for higher mileage cars too

My car has done 55K miles

The tyres were brand new in December and have covered about 5k since fitting (Sessantas if your wondering)

Will check tyres etc over weekend and swap around

The revised rear camber setting is 1 - 20 if memory serves me correctly.
