Service costs

Does a quote of just shy of £500 seem reasonable for a service MOT with front disks and pads replacing and ABS sensore replcemnt seem OK?

I think its quite reasonable or am i deluded?

Can't understand why the abs sensors would need replacing on a service.

I did my Ibiza TDi 130 sport last november.

Oil + filter, K&N panel air filter, pollen filter, diesel filter, brake fluid change, altenator drive belt, front discs, front pads & new wiper blades :

Was only £160 all in for the parts and it took a liesurly 1/2 day to do it. ( yes then there would be £35 on top for the MOT )

If your reasonably handy with spanners - do it yourself and save over £300 !!

Thats some nice advice although i don't think my expertise would extend beyond changing a filter or two. Or am i being a mechaphobe here? :D

Well the ACR and ABS lights are on. Went in the snow a week or so back. It was in need of a service and MOT so took it and they confirmed the fault.

This is my first year of driving so i am abit new to this. Someday i hope to be able to service my car myself, I do have a garage at the minute but it has no power or light.

Am i correct to assume alot of mechanical work can be done through intuition?

Ok this is roughly what you could buy the parts for from various site sponsors with probable labour times, someone else will correct me if I'm wildly out..............

£80 front pads and discs - 2hrs

£5 for oil filter - half hr to change oil and filter

£35 for oil

£8 for a cabin filter - 5 mins

£8 air filter - 5 mins

£25 for fuel filter (if they do this) - half hr

£10 cheap wiper blades - 10 mins

£7 rear wiper blade - 5 mins

£7 brake fluid

£35 ABS sensor if it needs doing - dunno never done one another half hr if the brake are already off?

So approx.£220 for the parts, on which they will be making a profit. If you aren't going to do it yourself £350 sounds fairer to me. There is always room for bartering. Approach them and tell them you know how much you can buy the parts for and £500 is too much for the job, what will they do for you?

I really would be happy to pay that aslong as i knew i was getting a decent job done on my car. Like i say they do come quite recommended and i have just moved to the area.

I think they quoted £150 for service and MOT which is cheapest in the cars history.

That work does sound quite simple so possible not the best price for that. They did sayt the sensor would be one of the major costs which i cannot understand why....sounds abit fishy maybe

Plenty of food for thought though.

ps. i suppose they do have a markup on all the parts you buy through them aswell.

Where are you based?

Isn't it £50 for an MoT?

Bob.

Hello DEANO,

Your dead right on what you stated, I concur 100%.

Just had an alternator belt + tensioners, auxcillary belt, water pump and G12 antifreeze changed, on my 2005 Fabia VRS.

Total £350 labour inclusive, at a local non-skoda garage.

If I added an MOT that would have been an extra £40.

I do my own servicing, but replacement parts etc work out around £80, (the labour garage charge would be another £150 approx.)

So a total of £620 (scary figure) LOL

This is a very small point.

2 hours to do the front discs and pads? I'm sorry but I dont agree with this having had it done many times and on the vrs. It can be done in an hour. My local mechanic charged me hours labour £35 inc vat to change the front discs and pads when I had them done on the vrs. And i'd never get charged on labour for changing a wiper blade as it does take 5 minutes tops to do.

For all of the above work you listed above barring no other issues it would cost £105 labour
