DIY Coil Pack Hold Downs

Featured Replies

Now, as per my blog, I have had issues lately of riding coil packs, now and then a coil pack would ride up and power would go to ****...

Now I had a look on Awesomes wibesite at the ECS Coil Pack hold downs, but for £40 odd they are a wee bit expensive for what they are. Yes, I appreciate they do the job perfectly, but to be honest, if I can save money then I will....

So I did.

I knew roughly what size plate I needed to make them out of, and I knew that halfords did their straight brackets, which are easily bent, happen to have the holes in just about the right spots and are cheap as chips.... So, bought two packs giving me four strips....

Did some rough measuring just to make sure, measure twice, cut and bend once.....

The bracket needed to be cut down to 160mm in length, any longer and it simply wouldnt have fit correctly, they can go smaller, but for that you would need to drill a hole, so, 160mm is perfect for length and perfect that if you were to use Halfords Straight Brackets, the holes are in the right place anyway....

I used some insulating tape to mark out the places to bend....

So providing you just buy the bracket stright off, the bends are as follows...

First = 19mm

Second = 54mm

Third = 110mm

Fourth = 145

With the bracket cut off at 160mm ( just remember to cut it before you bend it........)

Now when you put the Hold down over the coil pack, youll notice a nice gap between the coil pack the the top of the bracket, Rubber was obviously the best compound to use because itll give slightly while being pressed by the bracket....

For this I used an old Cam Belt I had lying around, perfect in width, only just wider than the bracket itself, but with the teeth it spread the pressure and was able to be compressed better.... Being subject to high temperatures, the cam belt is perfect...

Lengths were cut, I did not measure these, but they were basically 56mm in length or close to it....

Mounted like so....

And from afar not to obtrusive and fit under the Engine cover....

Anyway.... question fire away... total cost, well, £6 for the strips, and about 50 pence for the bolts, washer and spring washer, old cam belt free.....

TO DO: -

Going to get some nice heat shrink tubing and put it over the brackets, make them look a little better.....
