Remap's Then......

Featured Replies

Over in the Fabia1 forum I read lots and lots about re-maps and dead clutch's & DMF's.

I was thinking though.. Why is this.. should a re-map with all it's silky smoothness in the delivery actually give the clutch and DMF an easier time?

Or is it that the remaps are so powerful that although they don;t have the lump of a factory map they just rip the thing apart?

When someone has a clutch friendly remap does this mean it's smoother as well as having the top end torque pinned back?

Just wondered,

Thanks.

Low end torque is what kills clutches. If a car is inconsiderately tuned then you're asking for problems. If the map is well written with smooth delivery, and it is driven considerately, there's no reason why the clutch shouldn't last just as long as on a standard map.

I have been reading all about different maps and have read ones from Chipped-UK/Viezu Bromsgrove are particularly smooth and clutch friendly. I am now very temped to get one especially with their switchable "V-Switch" device. However I'm sure if you spoke to other remap companies, Shark, Jabba etc., they would create a smooth one for you. I'm sure I've read that Revo maps can be quite aggressive with their maps and should be driven carefully.

To get more reliability from clutches/DMFs with these more aggressive maps, you should only apply full throttle when the turbo is on boost, ie above 2000 rpm and therefore when accelerating make sure you are not in a too higher gear.

I thought that one of the benefit of remapping was that you could use more power in a higher gear, not have to change down, and that's where the fuel economy saving comes in?

I'm sure I must be missing something..... :o

I still drive in a higher gear and use the torque in my remapped Fabia. But when you want to have a bit of fun and put your foot down make sure its over 2000rpm

You can soon kill a clutch with the standard map, if you drive

like a ****.....

The remap is only part of the equation. The driver is the biggest part, and if you drive badly - ie ask too much of the car low down the rev range, you don't use the clutch properly, you ignore the signs of a struggling DMF (vibration through the transmission at low rpms), then yes, components will fail.

I'm not a driving legend or anything, but i did consider the mechanics in my old car, which is why my clutch was still barely worn when it was upgraded at 45k, 40k of which was on a pretty violent map. The dmf didn't give up until there was well over 200 bhp, and well almost 400lbs of torque hitting it.

So, treat it with respect, and enjoy the remap.
