I have just taken delivery of a new Octavia vRS Estate and I want to change the main beam, side lights and indicator bulbs but the manual tells me I have to remove the whole headlamp assembly. Is this difficult to do or can I attempt it myself.

Go see the topic "Facelift Octavia Headlights", it may cover what you're after.

Just changed my main / dip bulbs. So I can tell you as follows -

Open bonnet. Unscrew and remove plastic nut at rear / top of headlamp unit. Look to the bottom side of headlamp unit in front of radiator and you will see a plastic lock tab, lift this and at the same time pull steel locking lever horizontal as far as it will go. This releases the whole unit. Tap the unit gently with your hand at the rear and it will come away from the car. Release the wiring connector and you can do the bulb changes from the comfort of your armchair ! Putting back is just the reverse, although make sure your unit is back in the correct position in relation to your bodywork / wing with no gaps before re-locking the lever and screwing on the plastic nut. I found one headlamp went back into position without trying, the other I fiddled with a bit, (didn't seem to locate into position the first time so took it out and did again and was OK)

Hope this helps...

I had no idea how to release the cable connector. Not obvious what to prod/push/pull tug.

Instead, I turned the headlight upside down and rested it on a stool. Carefully stopped it from falling off while I changed the bulbs.
Bulb 'upgrade' has not really been worth the effort.

Thanks for the info guys will give it a try Sunday. The reason I am messing with the bulbs is that I like the lights to look silver so thats why I am changing the indicator bulbs. To my taste LED sidelights are much better than ordinary bulbs and finally when the manufacturer goes to the trouble of fitting HID dipped beam and you switch on main beam and its yellow not nice but it's a personal thing.

Dead easy to get the headlamp out, the cable connector is a bit fiddly but comes out easy too, the hardest bulb to get out is the little parking lamp which is done with foreceps or similar
