MOT Failure, need some advice.

I've got a 2006 Octavia Laurin & Klement 2.0 TDi. It went in for its MOT today and it failed on both front shocks and front nearside CV gaiter. The CV gaiter is split and both shocks are seriously leaking. The car has covered 89000 miles all motorway use, I was quite surprised as I wasn't expecting it to fail especially on shocks but there you go. I've been looking at eurocarparts and there seems to be two different types of shocks available one being 50mm and the other 55mm. My car has got the optional 17" alloys fitted from factory but I'm not sure about the suspension. I assume the two different size shocks relate to whether it has sports suspension or not, I maybe wrong. I just wanted some clarification and how I can find out which one of the two shocks I need. The difference in price between the two is only a couple of pounds.

I had it done at IN n OUT and they don't do MOT work just servicing so its not in their interest to fail it for some work. How common is it for a 4 year old Octavia to have both leaking shocks at 89000 miles?

A pair of shocks have a medium real live of around 60k miles, so yours have lasted more than enough. I know that the first time people hear about this they shock, but it is real, you have to change the shocks always around 60k miles (different brands require different mileages of course, but the standard ones are changed like that).

You can consider yourself lucky that you didn´t have any problem because of them.

Thanks that makes sense I'll have a hunt around for some new shocks, eurocarparts looks the best value.

I have also a year 2000 Audi A4 TDI and when the time to change the shocks arrived I bought a set of "Red Koni" shocks + springs. You can adjust (read your local garage) the height and "stiffness" (sorry don´t know the exact word, hope it is understandable) and they are warranteed for the vehicle lifetime so you don´t have to change them again. Also if one brakes it can be fixed.

They make the car more stable and they are harder than the standard ones (thanks God) but for my personal taste they are much better deal (and they have a similar price than Audi´s shocks...). My wife loves the result (may be she is a bit strange... but that´s one reason why I love her :-D ).Now I have done with them more than 100k miles and they are in perfect condition (local MOT passed every year).

Just one idea.

Not all garages are out there to rip people off!! :wonder: Us mechanics arent all bad you know!! Sadly people have a bad experiance with one garage & assume were all the same! grr..:thumbup:
