ChipBoost remap for VRS

Featured Replies

After checking a few recommendations on here I went for a Chipboost remap, now here’s myn,

I have been driving it for couple of weeks now and all I can say is that f’g goes, its like its on steroids!

Took it to James at Binnington Wold, Scarborough, he did a diagnostic check first, made a back up copy of the original map and then added the remap which all took less than hour.

I asked for a clutch friendly 170 BHP remap (he has a few to pick from), the power output is very smooth and mainly kicks in after 2k revs so u may not feel much in 1st/2nd but 3rd, now were talking!

As for MPG, it’s gone up slightly, +5 mpg over a 25 mile motorway drive.

He does his own maps and really knows his stuff, he can also set up maps to your liking from your ECU and I think he’s been doing them for 5 years now.

Before getting a remap I would recommend that you read up on everything and understand the process and what it does and also be prepared to fix/buy any parts just in case something goes wrong, because remember your car is not standard any more, it now has a pair of balls.

Cost? Just £200, Here’s a link to his site: www.chipboost.com, he does tractors too lol

Get it remapped, you’ll be driving it like you’ve nicked it! (btw thats a joke dont take it literally)

As a well-known remap sceptic, I had a look at this demon tuner's website and I have to say I'm less than convinced.

Trying to find a dyno scan or even a claimed power output, I checked the FAQ;

Q. Can my car be tuned?

A. We can tune nearly all cars, some of the best results are from the VAG range. Our equipment also covers Fords. Petrol and Diesel turbo engines see the best gains.

Translation: I can tune older cars that can be updated via the OBD port.

Q. Will my vehicles engine life be reduced?

A. In a word NO! Each vehicle is tuned to within the manufacturers tolerances and even driven very hard, the engine life would only be reduced by around 5%.

Translation: YES!, it may well be reduced. Especially of you drive it like you stole it.

Q. Can my dealer tell its been chipped?

A. Unless they are looking for it, no, only the data of the ECU is modified.

Translation: Yes, they can.

Q. Is fuel economy effected?

A. This is dependent on the driver, use all the extra power and yes, but drive sensible and the economy can even increase.

Translation: It probably will be worse, but if you drive it like a nun, you may find it's a bit better.

Q. Can the tuning be reversed?

A. Yes we can reset the file for you for a small fee.

Translation: Yes, once you've discovered it's pants, we'll hit you for another £50 to unmap it.

Q. Why should i choose you?

A. We have tuned over 600 vehicles, built up many repeat customers over the last 5 years. We are not an agent for other chip tuners so can offer great prices and a personal service.

Translation: We have charged lots of people twice - once to map it, and then to unmap it. That's a repeat customer. 600 vehicles, most of which could have been tractors, over 5 years is 120 cars per year or 10/month. At even £250 per map, that's an annual gross income of £30,000 per annum. In the world of remaps, that's a hobby, not a business.

I can't see anything on that website that would induce me to use ChipBoost over Washbrook, JabbaSport, P-Torque, Shark Performance, Awesome or any of the other established 'reputable' remappers. Most of them can back their maps up with dyno plots, if not actual rolling road testing on the day. And £200 for a remap isn't that cheap given that P-Torque will do before and after rolling road tests as part of the package for £275. And every other mapper I know of offers to put the car back to standard for free in the event of any issues.

I hope it works out for you, but based on that website I, personally, wouldn't make a special trip.

I can say nothing more than I have said before - Why would anyone look for a 'good value/cheap' map putting on there car?

You are happy to spend thoudands of pounds on buying a car but then want to find find someone who will modify this cars ecu on the cheap. free-fighting-smileys-424.gif

You get what you pay for in this life. Learn this the hard way if you do not believe me.

If you want to get your car custom mapped then have it done by the godfather of mapping - Mr Richard Washbrook.

Jabbasport and Shark seem to be the most popular on here for there tuning maps. Not too sure how custom these maps are though? They are highly rated and reputable in any case so this is where you need to be looking.

Apologies if this bursts your bubble RallySport150 (although wja96 seems to have done a good enough job for all of us!) but this is my honest opinion. Be willing to pay good money for a good map.

Ok wja96 I see your point it’s pretty obvious you don’t like chip boost based on a few questions from a website. As for everyone else there is a useful section on the site to gain more information than wja96 has, it’s called Contact Us.

If anyone wants to go to the big boys that’s fine but I advise you to do a search on chipboost before you do like I did, look at what other people have said about them and not just someone who analyses a website.

Hopefully other chipboosters will voice their opinion!

Sounds like you are Chipboost lol

Just voicing my opinion mate, don’t like it when people assume you’ve just bought a piece of turd

I shouldn't worry unduly about wja96's comments. He says he is a well known chip sceptic and all points he raises from your tuners website apply equally to all tuners. If anyone 'drives like they stole it' they'll reduce the life of their car whether it's been remapped or not. My brother has never remapped or tuned a car in his life, but he's managed to run plenty into the ground because he has absolutely no mechanical sympathy!

I had my last Fabia (100bhp TDI) remapped and it did give better fuel economy, it didn't smoke, it revved more freely and it gave more power when it was needed (which for me was for overtaking safely). That was done at 80k miles and was still going strong when I parted with it at 130k with no noticeable deterioration of the clutch. I felt it was money well spent.

If your remap gives you a smooth power delivery, doesn't smoke excessively, and you don't thrash your car to within an inch of its life there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't be happy with it.

I've not remapped my vRS for two reasons - first, for the way I drive I don't think it needs it, and second my husband would get upset if it could outrun his 3.0 litre petrol Audi (he sold his mk3 Golf GTI after I had my last Fabia remapped for that very reason) and he can't afford an RS4 :D :D :D :D

Sorry to jump on a month old topic, but JulieD ... where around the central belt could I get my fabia remapped, i don't mind paying a bit extra for a good good remap but all i can find so far is in England and it's a bit too far to travel.

You'll have to pardon me picking their website apart, as it's their advertising after all. I have taken your advice and searched for information on Chipboost and as far as I can tell you received no feedback about Chipboost on here, positive or negative. If you want to post a link to a thread anywhere you were advised to use them by someone somewhere else then do feel free. If you're happy, fine, and if you want to push Chipboost that's also fine, but they're not specialists in Skoda or VAG, there is no information about how their maps are developed, they don't appear to have a rolling road. In short, there is nothing apart from your posts to recommend them over "the big boys". Now, if I had a tractor, I still probably wouldn't use them, as it's quite a long way at 25mph.

Have you thought about one of our STS units?

Got mine done at Star Performance - www.starperformance.co.uk. Depending on where you are it's bit of a trek over to Fife but it's worth it - they really know their stuff

The kingdom of Fife isnt too bad, could easily make a day of it with the mrs. You would recommend them then?

I'll have a look at the STS unit, i'm new to all this :S

The STS unit gets a big thumbs up from me emoticon-0148-yes.gif.

Absolutely 100% recommended. Jim and Brian really know their stuff - they are VAG specialists and enthusiasts. Brian had a yellow Furby vRS a few years back - it was highly tuned, so they know their way around them

Have a look at http://www.sharkperformance.co.uk/sts.asp for more details on the STS - I'll be up in Edinburgh myself at the weekend if that helps you at all? I'm not sure where you're based.

I had a read at that earlier, impressive stuff!

I'm in Glasgow, on the outskirts towards edinburgh. Travelling around central scotland isnt a problem.
