Sounds like either pipe popped off or if no obvious problem when you look under the bonnet that the turbo may have failed, either way hopefully you bought from a dealer with a warranty so take it back ASAP and get them to look at it.

hi, thanks for reply.

unfortunately not from dealer though private price leaves room for some repairs!

has a history of turbo pipe leaking so hopefully this has come loose though gut feeling is that the turbo may have blown, any idea of what i should look for?

any idea on possible costs for repairs?

Loose pipe should be obvious, just have to get down and check all the way through the system, hopefully this is what it is as new turbo is expensive, there is a topic I saw on page 6 entitled "second turbo gone" the only sure fire way to see if vanes in turbo have gone is to take the pipes off and take a look. You didn't say what you were doing when it went, i.e. pottering about or pushing it a bit.

Just pulling on to a round a bout! had come out of sainsbury's and was going slow, put foot down to go on to r/b and heard pop/bang and car started kangaroo hoping. then wouldn.t change up from 1st etc. has dsg gearbox and changed better manually though no power at all.

not familliaqr with layout of engine or particularly technically minded, cant see anything loose and apart from small amount of oil on bottom tray rhs as you look at car everything else seems clean and tidy.

pipes are buried away they go from turbo round to intercooler at front of car then back to the inlet manifold at the rear of the engine so maybe undertray needs to come off to have a look, small amount of oil would be present in the inlet system and hopefully pipe has come off intercooler and blown this oil out, this would explain the lack of power as all the pressure from turbo is lost and you are effectively driving an sdi not a tdi, as you say you are not technically minded have you got breakdown cover i.e.AA or RAC? if so call them out would be the next port of call.

Yes have AA homestart & roadside would certainly be worth a call as they will know what they are looking at.

see from other link p.6 'second blown turbo' that if turbo has gone cost could be as much as £1700 this seems excesive.

is there any link that shows the schematics of the engine compartment so as to identify parts, i.e. turbo, intercooler, most seems hidden away and hard to identify oil, water and exhust pipes and their purpose.

It does sound like a popped pipe to me.

just gone out to have another look. engine is ticking over at 900 rpm sounds like a slightly broken exhaust when reved.

power loss when driven yesterday was similar to having air inlet closed on petrol engines, not sure if lack of turbo would have as dramatic effect, but then i dont really know about cars.

patch of oil aboput 50p size off undertray not excessive amount on tray, dirrectly under large (2-3'')rubberized pipe which runs parralell to grill.

is that part of exhaust or turbo?

yes new turbo plus fitting can be quite expensive but there are cheaper ways if you want to look around. the air pipes should be the biggest in the engine bay, first take off the engine cover, this just pulls up off the 2 front mounts, 1 mount on the back right then pull towards you to remove from the rear mount, there should be a plastic pipe running along the engine just behind the top of it , this is the inlet pipe to the turbo from the air filter, there is a pipe coming up from the front right corner of the car, looking at it from the front, up the front face of the engine, through a metal valve and then into a plastic "T" shaped assembly, this is the air intake to the engine, all I can suggest at this moment is that you look carefully at these and try to trace their route as much as you can to see if there is anything obvious amiss.

just seen post above, yes that large rubberised pipe sounds like the inlet pipe from intercooler, the turbo and exhaust are all located at the back of the engine, exhaust is obvious, turbo is "H" shaped assembly located at back of engine with 4 large and 2 smaller pipes attached to it.

just had a quick look and cant see anything obvious but im still fairly clueless at what i am looking at. Inital pop/bang appeared to be from opposite side from the turbo i.e. directly in front of passenger compartment, sounded like driving over large crisp packet!

think i will call AA first thing in morning and take from there.

thank you for your help and input which is greatly appreciated, i will keep you informed of further developements.

Just sounds like a popped off hose to me as well. Hope you get it sorted soon.

Thank you all for you help and I am pleased to confirm it was a pipe that had 'popped off''.

pipe was in bottom r/h/s/ of compartment going from intercooler to turbu and joint at corner had popped under pressure. have reconnected and now running perfectly. bit worried that could come off again, however so far so good. metal clip that holds lugs in on pipe seems to move slightly outwards under higher revs so may pop out again, at least i now know where to look and how to rectify and am massively relieved that it is not as serious as i first feared.

thank you countryboy, cjb and vrslen for your knowledgeable input :)

Hi trb65,

Glad to be of help, everyone on here has a little knowledge(or lots in some cases) of nearly everything to do with these cars and are glad to help a fellow Briskodian in need of assistance, Lets hope this is an isolated incidence otherwise it may be a case to get a new elbow to cure, or the time old cure of a tightly applied cable tie around the problem joint! Hope you now enjoy your car, I know I enjoy mine, DSG is an excellent box to use, just slip it into D after a long day at work and let it do the work without knowing what it's doing.

Ian.
