Changed MAF and still not as fast as it should be

Featured Replies

Hi got a new Bosch MAF and a new air filter (standard one) and with the MAF connected it feels better now then it was before. But it stil dont feel as smooth as a normal vrs, its not slow but somethings holding it back.

What else could it be, air leak? If s where would I check for leaks?

Iwould recomend cleaning your throttle body & if its not been done recently id replace the fuel filter,i did this to mine last week & its transformed the car,it runs a lot smoother & all the hesitations & cold running lumpyness have all gone! :)

Mikey I'm considering doing my fuel filter soon as to my knowledge it's never been changed and the car only seems to run at its best when it's either a full tank or nearly empty :S

how much did the filter cost you?

and secondly did you have much grief changing it? I know I need to de-pressurise the fuel system but did you plug the hoses when you removed them from either end of the old filter?

I was thinking about doing the TB, I'll do it tomorrow. There's a seat dealership around the corner let me check if they have the part. As for the fuel filter I think my dad replaced that last week along with the fuel pump. So thats not not the problem.

Another point to consider when the turbo blew, there was oil everywhere but they said they cleaned it all, could some pipe be dirty or blocked? I have a feeling it might be that or a air leak.

Im not sure of the cost as my pal at a car parts place got me engine oil, oil, fuel, air & pollen filters & spark plugs for £35. :D it wasnt hard to replace,i did do it on a ramp but you could do it on the ground with car jacked up on that side,i did release fuel cap 1st,i didnt have any real problems changing it only that the juberlie(?) clip securing it broke so id recomend you have a new one before you start & the plastic clips on the pipes were a bit stiff to press in to release the pipes off the filter.(original filter & had done 120k!) i did plug the old filter when i disconnected the pipes(just to save a face full of petrol!)

May be worth putting it back to basic settings , so it can adh=just back to the new MAF

May be worth a try

Looks like I can get one from the stealer for less than a tenner. I think my filter must be the original one and has also done over 120k, new filter doesn't appear on any old service receipts. The only thing I was worried about really was loads of fuel coming out of the two hoses even if I de-pressurise the system. I'll have something ready to plug the ends just in case.

Not much fuel comes out when you release the pipes, just have a container under & a plug/bung to put on filter & you will be fine. oh & dont smoke a fag whilst doing it ! :giggle: lol

HI

No put back to factory setting

This is the same as if it was to come out of the showroom

With VAG come , its like setting it back to basics

I do believe disconnecting the battery does the same job too

But make sure you have the radio code

Given that you have had a turbo blow, it is a good idea to take a look inside the intercooler.

If you have the standard one, it may be full of oil.

This can make a big difference to its efficiency and a noticeable decrease in power

yeah its a standard intercooler.

Looks like a big job, cant do it myself. i might have to pay someone to do it, is it most likely that how can i be sure what it is? when the turbo kicks in i can definately feel it , it boosts good.

So i dont think its turbo related, it just feels rough and heavy compared to my cousins whose done more mileage, his feels lighter, smoother and when you boot it faster and more responsive.

Here's the guide I did a while back for intercooler cleaning. It does take a couple of hours and you need a few tools but it's not a biggie.

If you're cleaning the TB then you should be able to see how much gunk and oil is in the TB and the hose that goes down to the intercooler. If it looks like a lot then an intercooler clean might be worth a shot too.

Well ive ordered the part for the TB so ill change that in the next couple of days and ill be able to check if the rubber pipe connecting to it is dirty or not.

Here is what I think could be causing the laggyness:

1) blocked pipe of some sort or intercooler

2) dirty exhaust (was sposed to be cleaned out but still could be a bit filthy)

Apart from that i really dont have no clue, could driving without oil have permanently damaged one of the engine cams or something? If its that id expect it to be even slower as it is id just say its heavier and sluggier then it should be.

Turbo related? I doubt it as the boost feels bang on, its more laggier before it kicks in.

Finally, is there any skoda specialist or anyone I can show it to around the midlands who wouldnt charge me an arm and a leg.

Apparently it cant be an air leak, because they put the emissions tester on the exhaust and the emissions were bang on.

What about the spark plugs are they gapped ok and in good condition. Maybe some oil could of got stuck to them and degraded them?

But then the ecu could be compensating. I think lol

yep plugs are in good nick, just got told they also cleaned the intercooler out. so thats already done.

Are you running it on 98 ron fuel all the time?

Also does your cousins one have the same stuff in the boot as yours, the same tyre pressures, same amount of fuel in the tank? May sound a bit picky but mine feels a lot faster with only an 8th of a tank of fuel, tyres at the correct pressures and the spare wheel and tools removed from the boot than it does with a full tank of fuel, underinflated tyres and all the stuff I usually keep in the boot.

I drove his again last night, deffo is faster by how much im not sure. its not just that aswell, its smoother and feels lighter more responsive. Well ill get the tires checked today, hes aint perfect tires wise anyway and he has a bass box in his, i have a gas tank now aswell. But shoudlnt be that much difference, i wanna get it on a rolling road so they can check the BHP on it.

But dont know where they are around here?

My calipers make that groaning sound and my front brakes are starting to do it a bit now, someone told me the calipers are seized would that affect the way it peforms speed and acceleration wise?

The groaning sound sounds like the famous VRS mooing, it should only do this when you put the brakes on while reversing and is not really a problem (well apart from the noise). You can check if a brake is binding by jacking up the car and turning the wheel by hand then getting someone to press the brake pedal and then release it, if the wheel is slow to start turning again once they release the brake then the brake is binding. If the binding is really bad though you would notice the brakes heating up a lot and the tyres getting in a state.

Just noticed you have an LPG conversion were you getting this kind of running before the LPG?

whereabouts are you based re. the rolling road

yeah same before LPG, birmingham by tyseley. b25.
