i dont know how you are going to get in, but it should not relock if you open a door, this suggests a faulty microswitch somewhere.

Ring your insurance company. They should send a car locksmith to get into the car for you. This avoids any claim you might make for damage to paintwork or windows caused by breaking in. Similar principal to getting windscreen chips fixed for free.

I would agree with Mannyo about the faulty microswitch in the drivers door lock assembly.

iirc, if you unlock the car, and then don't open any doors (or have a faulty microswitch) then the car will re-lock itself 20 seconds later, or something like that, on the "assumption" you have unlocked the car in error.

thanks for the advice all round
the faulty switch is something I will have to look into but for the moment regaining entry is no1 on the agenda!
got lend of a lock pick set not that I'm experienced in this line of work but I'll try anything at this stage
as for the insurance not sure if it would effect my no-claims but it might come to that cause I don't want to do damage to paintwork etc
I'll go home and watch a few episodes of magnum pi and then try the pick set
fingers crossed
thanks

No spare keys anywhere?

When I was away for a job with work, and my boss locked the keys for our lease Ford Focus in the boot (tsk, just can't trust your boss can you!! :giggle: ), we called the RAC (or AA), as he was a member of one of them, and what they did was ....<pm me for details>....

Hey presto, the boot springs open, so it might be worth seeing if your breakdown cover can help, or if someone in your office/current location has cover for any vehicle..... and would make the call on your behalf.....

Might be worth removing some of that info in that post as it may flag up on a google search result and get used inappropriately - perhaps PM instead? Just a thought. :)

Noted and done :-) However that particular trick won't work on the Octy.

This entry trick is well known and a known break in method for all Mk1 and 1.5 focuses due to where the wiring runs

And it got us out of trouble up in Cumbria, when I wanted to be headed back down to Dorset, so  to Mr RAC (or AA) who let us back into the Focus! :giggle:

Just a to bump a recent thread as the very same thing happened to me this week - ie car self locked with the only key in the car.

My solution was a friend with a "slim jim".

Sadly, I wasn't there, but he gave me a call just before starting, and when he managed it, and it took him about 5 minutes.

I hope this helps anybody else who finds themselves in the despairing situation that I found myself in!

Self-locking suggests which ever door you opened has a faulty microswitch in the lock mechanism.

This has happened to me in the past as well (unfortunately) but my car was running :| Also If you only open the passenger doors and not the drivers door after unlocking, it automatically locks itself even when running (as I found out lol), managed to get a strip of plastic though the top of the door and open the passenger window in the end.
The next day I got a spare key cut by a local shop, It only opens the doors and wont start the car but next time at least Im prepared :p

If you get something like a coat hanger or a bit thicker you can get it past the door seal just above the button on the inside door and push down on the unlock button inside :)

Can be tricky and frustating when you just miss it lol.
