Switched 12V for hands free kit

You can purchase switch live emultators. They work by sensing when the engine is running. They just need an earth and a live feed. You can also purchase fuses that have a fly lead off them which use to replace a fuse which is switched and save you hacking into your cars cables.

Forget those CAN emulators, I still have one lying around in my house (and they are expensive!).

These will only switch if the ignition is on, exactly the same if you take a lead from one of the fuses that are switched.

The problem with our cars is, that if wired or if a CAN emulator is used, the handsfree kit will shut off as soon as you turn the ignition off. AFAIK it is not possible to have it switched as the radio (switching off as the key is pulled out).

So if replying a call, you will have to let the engine run as long as you are talking.

(know this problem, installed a parrot in my car).

Never seen those yet. Those are cool. Easy to use. (I always put the cable in the fusebox and than put the fuse in. Works also, but isnt as neat).emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

This is a link to the autoleads catolog page 126 has the spur fuses on it. They are a cheap easy way to get a switch live with out cutting into the cars wiring.

Those look promising, however, and this may be me being dense... Do they provide a fused feed? And if so, how?

I can see that the fuse fits into the fusebox and there is a cable coming out of it, which presumably is the live feed, but I'm assuming that you'd still need to connect a fuse to that between the "spur" and the device you're powering...

Still, it's nice and neat and even if I still need an inline fuse I'm really interested in getting a couple of these.

I normaly put an inline fuse with them. Although depending on which way arround you put them in the fuse box is if they are fuse or not. If you have a blank switch live i there they can be used as a fuse. I dont like to put more load on the fuse and leave the same ratinng it. I would have thought it would be fine tho.

Sorry ment to say you can get them from any one with an autoleads account. If you want them then I would advise printing the page out and taking it with you. I use them as they are allot quicker than opening up a fuse box. I have to say on my own car I would put a spur into the fuse box if there is a blank but for customers cars they tend not to want to spend the money on my time. They are great as they do no damage to the car and dont leave a trace if you come to sell the car or have any warranty claims. I get cross at work when I catch lads just cutting into cable behind the dash as there is no way of telling that it is power or data. At the fuse box you no it is just a power circuit. I offten get cars come in after radios being fitted and complaints that things like displays, central looking and speedo dont work.

I have taken a switched live from my tyre pressure montitor switch, easy to pop the switch out, cant remember which was the correct wire, so will need a circuit tester to find it.

Hope this helps

I am not so sure that I agree with your description of function of the CAN Bus adaptor - using this should retain an ign sense feed until the key is removed i.e same operation as the car head unit.

To my understanding, this is the only way to maintain an ign sense feed without the key being in full ign position, which is what you have if you use the feed off the fuse box.

John.

I have such an igni box myself, and had it installed when installing my Parrot MKi.

It shuts off as soon as the engine is turned off. Took it out because I already had a lead form my fusebox lying around.

And now it is still lying around unused. Threw away 30 Euros emoticon-0101-sadsmile.gif
