Dual Action Machine Polishers

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have recently purchased my first Skoda - a 2003 Octavia Elegance 1.8T Auto.

Generally very pleased with it and pleasantly suprised by the additional "ooomph" when the Turbo cuts in!

Anyway I seem to have been well and truly sucked into the correct cleaning / polishing thing with this car especially with the extremely helpful info articles on this forum.

Having already spent a lot more money than ever before on Microfibre cloths and various cleaning & polishing products, my question relates to Dual Action Machine Polishers, one of which I am considering purchasing . Unless I missed something, most information I have seen tends to show or mention these polishers being used on nice flat body panels, bonnets etc. Are they actually still OK to use on rounded or angled parts of the body such as wings etc and right up to other trim ie window edging. Or is it necessary to hand clean in these areas to avoid damage to paintwork etc perhaps through the polishing pad not being able to be applied flat.

Thank you in advance for any guidance you may be able to give! :hi:

You can use them anywhere mate, sure you need to be careful on edges and sharp areas but a DA will not build up as much heat as a Rotary so it's pretty safe, the best way to help with such tight areas is to purchase smaller pads and backing plates..........

Your car's not a blue one is it ? The 1.8 T and auto is a rare combo. I had one and very quick it was too. I know what you're saying about the turbo ! Bliss !

Thanks for the feed back Baker 21 - very much appreciated!

Think I will go for a Meguiars G220, just have to find the best option complete with polishing pads etc.

If you intend to correct siwrling and scratches then I would suggest the Menz combo pack as this will provide enough of a range in polishes to cut out the defects as VAG paint is pretty tough.........

Hi Paul,

My car colour is called Eucalyptus (a pale metallic green). I agree the 1.8T with Auto does seem to be a pretty rare beast.

I know the quoted performance figures (could only find them in Parkers Guide), of 134mph and 0-60 in 9.9 seconds is somewhat slower than the manual version, but it seems that much quicker than those quoted by Parkers. I had a 2001 Mondeo 2.5 V6 (manual) about 5 -6 years ago and from memory it was on a par with that!

Thanks once again for the additional information Baker 21! - I will check the Menz option out.

May I say, that I also currently own a 1998 Ford Scorpio 2.3 and have done for the past 5 1/2 years. They have their own website and owners forum which is brilliant. First impressions are that this forum gives strong indications that it will be equally as good!

Hi, M0bov,

Thanks for your reply.

I have seen the Kestrel DAS6 advertised on some of the "Car Care" websites. I got the impression that they are fairly new to the market (perhaps wrongly), consequently perhaps I have seen little or no feedback on their capability, build quality etc. to assist me in forming an opinion. I agree they are that much more inexpensive, do you have one, or experience of using one perhaps?

Yes had one for almost a year, they have been on the market for almost two years. There's been far more problems with the Megs polisher. The build is slightly better on the megs but not enough to justify the price.

I had the kestrel last year and in all fairness it was brilliant. Never used the megs so unable to make a comparison however I can vouch for the kestrel giving fantastic results!

Sold mine over winter as I sorted my car and a few mates and ended up making a nice profit. However due to being lazy over the winter months and leaving my car in the hands of the local hand car washers, i'm going to need to re-purchase one for the summer I think! My paintwork is in a right state!

:o

Kestral all the way!

Affordable, and rather well built if you ask me.

I prefer to use the 4" autobrite pads rather than the 7" meguiars pads.

The 4" pads are ideal for doing curved surfaces.

Thanks Browny_37,

I actually decided to go for the DAS-6 Pro from Clean Your Car on Friday afternoon, the additional info regarding the 4" Autobrite Pads is much appreciated by the way.

Thanks again.
