Mates got a 1 series convertible and wants to put a bike rack on it. Took it into the dealers, got quoted...................£600 + VAT, + fitting. A cool £1,000 all in, for a bike rack.

I'd want it gold plated at that price.

If he needs a towbar fitted for the bike carrier it will cost him 2 whole days labour!! Plus unless he has a higher spec engine, he will need a fan upgrade too!! I was reading over on the Audi forum that the A4 3.0TDis gang where having similar problems. You would think that they would have adequate cooling already (yes I know that the car might be actually used to tow something heavy). It seems to be a problem with cars with sophisticated electronics that the things have to be coded in to the car and the car needs to know it has adequate protection for pulling a heacy load. it certainly isn't an easy job any more :(
I got a tow bar fitted by a BMW dealer who didn't read the fitting time requirements too carefully and he charged me £300. I got the car back after 2 days :) a bit of a result for me really.
Oh course all this is irrelevant if he is getting the thing stuck on his roof………..oh hang on a mo :D

Oh I should have added that one of the A4 boys was saying the total cost for having a towbar fitted (he wanted to put a bike rack on it) was nearly £2,000!!!! As Audi were not giving a contribution to it any more. If you are buying new, it certainly pays to tick the ‘towbar’ option. I expect it will come to Skodas before long too :(

Bike racks come in roof or towbar form to be approved.
The hang on ones are not much use on many cars these days, especially when you need the tow electrics to light up the rear reg plate and lights that it obscures anyway.
Illegal in a fair few parts of Europe too.
