Ipod Touch 3rd gen and MDI

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I am planning to buy a new Octavia VRS on Monday, and I want to find out whether the MDI/standard headunit is compatible with the Ipod Touch 3rd gen. I have found that just about every Ipod accessory does not actually work fully with the 3rd gen, even ones that say they work with the 2nd gen. This is obviously great, and has meant I have had to get new chargers and cables and things, but I don't want to shell out a fair few sheets for MDI and find it doesn't allow the control properly, or more likely doesn't charge the ipod. I know the 3rd gen is pretty new, think was only released in Sept 2009 in UK, and car mfrs tend to lag behind in support for even vaguely current mobile devices. Still at least BT works with my BB pearl :) Thanks in advance

I'm 100% that it will because the touch is essentially an iPhone without the phone and both the 3G and 3Gs iPhones work fine.

Just be aware the "Control" through the MDI is not control as you would expect whist touching the device itself. Control of songs through the MDI is rather basic for example you cannot play any playlists stored on the device you are basically limited to searching (laboriously) if you have a lot on music by scrolling on the Bolero screen or using "Mix" which is the Bolero version of shuffle but has it's own quirks.

Thanks. I previously bought a Kensington charging LOD cable that worked with Iphone 3GS on that premise, but it didn't work with the Ipod. I had no idea Apple were quite so good at conning people. Apparently they moved the charge pin out in the interface on the 3rd gen so you need to buy all new peripherals/accessories. Very clever. I guess I can always go for the option, and if it doesn't then maybe sell it on Ebay or something as I understand the MDI is a removable unit that you can fit yourself or have fitted at a dealer. On the ipod control bit, there seems to be a lot of confusion on these forums, with people posting pics and all sorts to prove what you can and cannot do with it. I suspect the variability of experience is down to the differences between Ipod versions.

If you remove the MDI there will be a hole left in your glove box. To me it's an inexpensive option and imo not worth it. On top of the MDI interface you also need to buy a cable specific to the product you are using (there is only one iPod cable) at a stupidly inflated price even on ebay. Here is Australia they charge Aus$95.00 (58 pounds) for the interface cable.

If you have the jumbo bin then using a 3.5mm - 3.5mm av cable from the iPod headphone jack to the aux port in the jumbo box achieves the same thing as the MDI with three differences.

1. You get total control of the iPod because you actually control the iPod not the Bolero interface.

2. You do not see artist or track info on the Bolero screen.

3. No charging (easily fixed).

Yea i'm using the aux/aux method in my current car. It's OK, but a bit fiddly with the Touch as you don't get any tactile feedback with the touchscreen as opposed to buttons so you need to constantly look at what you are doing rather than watching the road. My previous ipod I could do most of it without looking due to the clickwheel etc. The charging thing is an issue anyway as I don't think there are Touch 3G car chargers available yet... well not easily sourced anyway. Apparently you get better sound with a LOD cable (plugs into apple socket rather than headphone out) such as fits the MDI, as this gives an unamplified feed to the headunit so less distortion etc. Ah well its only £3 a month of something for the option over the period of the contract.

The Bolero touch screen is far more difficult to control than the iPod Touch one. On a scale of 1-10 I'd give the iPod about 8 and the Bolero 2.

If you have lots of songs it's no fun.
