wingmirror progress!

Featured Replies

Well - 4 days to kill, kind of, this weekend, so decided now was the time to start work on my £10 wingmirror with badly scored tip - All going black! BLACK MAGIC!

PS: Not worthy of a blog after all, it's just a bloody mirror :D

Started off with a 240v sander and took the edge of the main bits. Then perservered with some 250 grit sandpaper and did the bits the sander could not reach due to shape.

Left me with this, once I had washed off all the dust (and the dust off my trousers :D)

Then attacked it with a decent layer of non-descript black acrylic to act as a base-coat. Fairly thin'ish initial layer which will be built up in 2 stages before I think about breaking out the black magic metallic. :) Looking OK though for a first start - just glad the sun is out (for how long, who knows...... )

looking good

Is it a standard vRS mirror just in back?

It's a standard door mirror - vRS ones are no different to classic trim ones in shape. These must have come off a comfort trim I think, as they are electric - obviously came in the wrong colour too, not that that actually mattered. ;) Sander soon removed all the lacquer and most of the paint.

Had a bit of a panic earlier and thought I had no black magic metallic paint..... :o but found a half full can..... I will be letting the mirror dry now in the "sun" (just had to dash out and bring it inside thanks to an impending heavy rain shower.....) until this evening and will then set about it with black magic metalllic, letting that dry overnight - then on Sunday, smooth off with 1200 wet & dry, then start the lacquering process.

Have reached a point where I think there is sufficient base-coat on to work with. Sunday I will look at flattening it off a little with wet & dry, then build up the lacquer coats and hopefully this thing will shine real nicely. B)

Do you work on cars for a living? 'cos you seem really good at what you do :)

I'm an accountant! :giggle:

I suppose I "learn by doing" and as shown by my current nearside wingmirror on the mongrel, I didn't do the first paint job correctly.... This time I am using info from detailingworld and a couple of other sources as I want this black finish to be really good, and long lasting.

cool :)

*offtopic* Is the mongrel back on the road now? :) I remember seeing you other threat where u had some problems with her :'(
