Road trip 2010

Featured Replies

Wasn't planning on a roadtrip this year but had my ear bent by a certain member who may not even be able to make it :dull:

So this year at very short notice and depending on the weather Postman pat tours will be leaving Dover on Saturday 19th of June 10pm the (very rough and open to change) itninery is:

Drive down to Todtnau to arrive in time for Breakfast and a blast on this : http://www.hasenhorn-rodelbahn.de/index.php?sprache=eng&site=&freicontent=&PHPSESSID=51d522a64035fb4bbe3195152689cecf then drive down to Interlaken and the valley of Waterfalls before carrying on to the foot of the Eiger and finding a bed for the night.

Day 2 Drive to Merringen andclimb the Reichenbach falls before continueing over the Grimsell pass and the Nufenen Pass to start looking for a 'zimmer frei'

Day 3 San Bernadino, Splugen, and Abula passes followed with the Fluela and searching for a bed around Davos/ Zernez and another blast on the fluela in both directions (trust me its that good)

Day 4 and 5 Depends on Conditions, Umbrail pass then either i) Stelvio, reschen Timmels joch Jauffenen, or ii) Gavia and a fun route to Bolzano, then in no order a play in the Dolomites, Are you ready for this: valparola, falzarego, giau, staulanza, duran, aurine, cereda, rolle, valles, san pellegrino, lavaze, costalunga, fedaia, pordoi, sella, gardena, campolongo, thats 17 passes before heading back toward Bolzano. May do all 17 in one day staying in Bolzano 2 nights or find a bed on route.

Day 6 Either fastest route to Birchestgarden or via the Jauffenen and timmels joch, for a night there and a visit to the Eagles nest.

Day 7 long drive up through Germany to as close to ferry as needed to catch an earlyish boat home on Day 8

The plan is not to bother booking any hotels, and to check pass conditions the week before (some don't officially open until July due to Snow) If everything is looking driveable then I will book the ferry then and scope out B&B along route for prices and availability to get a general idea of where I/ we can stop.

So if anyone as a free week 19- 27 June and fancies a bit of an adventure I would guess the mileage to be around 2,200 - 2,500 on the continent, ferry is about £45 and B&B + meals + attractions + snacks I would budget around £50 a day (but could be a lot cheaper, depends on how expensive your tastes are, and wether you require a single room or willing to share. Will need Swiss and Austrian road tax (£30'ish altogether) and possibly German green tax (£5) or you can risk it. Will need CHF and Euro.

A bit short notice but should be a laff and a bit of an adventure, and like I say weather dependant.

Any car welcome its not a race, Any takers?

All the best Andrew

Usual guff:

Please note in all countries it is ileagal to carry radar detection equipment and they can seize the vehicle if such is found wether it is being used or not! (Last year in France we got pulled by the customs and believe me they search the car when they pull you:()

Individuals will be responsable for arranging their own medical/health/travel insurance....a must in the countries we are visiting, also recovery cover for their own vehicles in the case of breakdown or accident, suitable vehicle insurance and meeting the laws of the country being travelled through. Whilst i will provide a route for each day and endevour to have everyone stay together it will be the responsability of the individual to make it to the evenings accomodation, sat nav with european maps is reccomended, at the very least a good map (neither of which is provided:P)

MIght well be intrested, would like to give the evo a europe run before I get shot of it.

Plus I've wanted to go the Eagles nest ever since Band of Brothers.

Would be good to have you with us again Simon, with a bit of luck William will sort his holidays out and a guy from the MX-5 forum as expressed an interest. No starting avalanches with the Evo though :giggle:

I really fancy a visit to the Eagles nest, the road up is meant to be interesting as well :p The salt mines look well worth a visit if there is time.

Basically anything is doable as there is no fixed route and with not booking hotels we can either push on or stop at places of interest.

Well changed dates for a course so now free.

Booked the 10pm dover dunkirk sat 19 June, and 2pm dunkirk dover 27 sun June. Norfolklines

Price as increased by nearly £10 since I checked a fortnight ago, if this volcano continues to disrupt air travel the price can only go up.

I'll hold out to next weekend to book but preety certain I'll be coming.

No worries, I have decided to go regardless, seen as swmbo as given me a pink ticket and is decorating the kitchen that week B)

New bloke at work has been delayed by the volcano, but should start this monday. We'll see how he gets on in his first week, if he knows his stuff then I'll be good to go. I certainly hope so, with all the trouble I've caused :D

Not so much trouble as expense, I dread to think what swmbo will spend on decorating when I am away :o

Still better than being at home and doing it myself ;)

Throw a copy of PC's for dummies at the temp, he will be fine.

463 'views' and only 2 interested, poor show Brisky :dull:

Looks like a fantastic trip but funds really wouldn't allow me to join you :( Very jealous of you!

i may be interested, what will be the average cost for 1 person in a diesel car for the full trip?

463 'views' and only 2 interested, poor show Brisky :dull:

A few of those views are mine. Unfortunately your dates don't work for us, but you've given us some fantastic inspiration for planning our road trip in July :thumbup:

I'd be up for a group trip next year

  • Author

Irin you have a PM, I am budgeting around the £1k mark for myself in a MX-5 all in Bradford to Bradford if that helps.

Hi PP

Yeah, I've viewed it, but that's a UK week for me :(

But as mercurio said, some interesting inspiration there!

Keep up the good work fella.

cheers ... Darren

I booked the ferry, so i'm in, but i will go on friday evening and meet you in Germany, I wanna do some laps on the ring saturday :)

Pat can you please find a poit on the route for early sunday morning to get together.

  • Author

 Good to have you along Irin, then there was three!

The best place to meet on Sunday will be at the Rollercoaster park as I was planning on spending a couple of hours there. It is the Steinwasen park just outside of Todtnau. All being well we should arrive there for 9- 930am and leaving around 11. I will send you a PM with my mobile number, in case there is any issues.

Oh and be careful at the ring don't want you blowing your turbo before we even start :o

Edited by postmanpat

Nice one, if all going well for me I'll be there!

Good to have another.

Just to clear up in advance I will be sampling many of the filling stations on route for a fuel comparisson excercise and notbecause my car is a) thirsty and B) has too small a tank.
