knackered divertor valve (maybe)?

Featured Replies

right my car has just had its 40k service and it ran fine the afternoon i brought it home, but the next day i noticed the performance had dropped off , i turned the radio down and could hear a loud whistling when the turbo spins up. at first i thought has the mechanic badly attached a pipe or something , then i thought has the diverter valve split . do these symptoms sound like the valve has split from what i described.

im going to ring the garage asking them to have a look saying it was after the service, but thats not till wednesday , is it hard to check it out myself

any thoughts or help would be appreciated!

I guess it could be or they could have loosened a pipe taking the engine cover off to replace the air filter in the service. It is difficult to imagine any other part of the service that would cause the symptoms.

Of course, it could be the DV and there may be an argument for replacing it if it is still the old diaphragm type even if it is not split. The last quote I saw was something like £40 for the DV and £15 to fit.

right seems as there is loads of interest in this thread ill update it, i took it back to the dealers and they checked over what they had done in the service and they couldnt find anything wrong, id mentioned the divertor valve and they didnt check it because it hadnt been touched during the service. but they had read the fault codes and it showed 0299 underboost pressure , and they said i would have to book it in for a full diagnostics check and it wouldnt be until 6th may, and £58 per hour labour, the head of workshop also said they had never replaced one yet they havent had any problems with them .so after reading the symptoms on a few vw sites i decided it was the divertor valve and i would change it myself, part ordered £52.

fitting it was easy i jacked the car up and supported it on axle stands, removed the engine undertray and removed the old one 3x allen bolts and it was off , to my relief it was split , new one bolted on and job done. ive taken a few pics of the knackered valve and the new valve and also one underneath the car with the valve removed.

hopefully this thread might help someone else and save them some money at the dealers, on a brighter note the car feels like it has a lot more punch from the turbo now it pulls stronger higher up in the rev range now!!!!!

Good job - they go sooner or later so well worth doing what you did

I've just had a remap on a 2011 TSI vrs and have the same fault code when in performance map but no fault code when on standard map. Maybe this DV could be the culprit. I have read that the TSI have a different DV than the TFSI and that this wouldn't happen, especially at 4k miles.
