VRS Owners

Recommended Posts

OMG, I'm trembling as I write this.

Is there a need for a separate, ahem, 'area', to satisfy the needs of the VRS community??? I mean, I see the frequent posts of these guys (and occasionally gals) and I feel singularly inadequate and uninspired to diagnose the 'jpg' picture of a brake calliper collecting excessive dust or comment on marginal tyre widths.

Pile in and let known what you think!.

We have owned 5 Octavias I think, 2 VRSs, one a 1.8t and one the 2 litre TSI. The VRS has a few upgrades over the less powerful Octavias but it shares many of the key virtues of the less powerful versions. Probably the main reason for going for a VRS was its better seats, firmer suspension suiting more spirited driving. The top speed in excess of 150 mph is fairly academic unless one fancies a trip over to Germany. Because Skoda UIK were doing the 40/47 th reduction (spot the VAT specialist) and doing 1.5% flat finance and we are luck to enjoy 75% NCD the VRS was an easy choice although both the 1.4 and 1.8 7 speed DSGs were also tempting.

It is not all VRS owners that annoy me but those VRS owners that believe they can vastly improve upon the VAG billion Euro development program by chipping it for a few hundred quid and getting a better car. At least they pay taxes (hopefully) so please do not tar us all with the same brush as some of us simply want a competant / fun all round car that is incredibly good value for what it is.

I've no idea what I've done to annoy you, but please don't tar everyone with a remapped vRS with the same brush. Some of us enjoy reading threads on all Octavia variants and other Skodas and respect the personal choices other people have made.

I would make remapping illegal if I had my way, also changing exhausts and all other such modification illegal and this is the way the EU actually seems to be heading. It is not a personal attack and please do not take it as such. We are now in a world where emissions are becoming increasingly important and I have to breath the air so I would not want people tickering with the engine settings that these brilliant engineers have arrived at. I hope you and others can respect this position. I use to work on a rolling road, tune cars and motorcycles but those days of tinkering with these highly complex and developed machines is overdue and should be outlawed in my humble opinion. If people want a quicker car then I believe people should trade in for one biult at the factory to that spec and that is best for emmissions, road safety etc.

I respect your views but would be interested in evidence for the case that a remap from a reputable company may increase emissions. What type of emissions are we talking about? Many owners of remapped vehicles on Briskoda report improved fuel consumption, which implies lower CO2 emissions.

I would not have remapped my car if I thought it would be less safe as a result. My insurance company appears to agree with me.

i agree totally with you and find it insulting to be found irritating for no reason than for choosing to have remapped my vehicle.

my vRS is better than yours

Off to polish my big shiny DSG knob...................

On the subject of knobs, I'm not overly impressed by the standard FL knob that's on my 1.4TSI gearstick - very 1980s stereo-ish. :'( Hope they conjure up something less tacky for the next generation.

But coming back to issue in hand (and don't be starting wars over remapping and CO2 emissions - where on earth did that come from???) I still think there's a case for maybe giving the VRS brigade a little strip of forum racetrack of their own.

On a wider note, Skoda marketing needs to consider giving VRS a brand/message/direction of its own, as it probably deserves it - remember the halcyon days of Ford RS?

Can we get back to the original post here rather than cocking about rubbing each other up the wrong way?!!

I think a VRS section is a cool idea. emoticon-0148-yes.gif

I would be up for that too

Thats 1 more here, and just to add to whats already been said, my emission figures from a recent MOT were actually lower now than before the remap!! maybe instead of being criticial of mods on ickle 2 litre engines, attention should be focused on the yanks with their big block hemmies churning out 500+ co2's........ :p

yeah, i think so too ..... seeing as how i own the crappiest variant of the marque (classic) i do sometimes feel that i am regarded as the poor relation, and trawling through multiple threads per page that end up being vRS specific does make things a bit awkward when trying to find information.

just my 5 cents worth, feel free to hurl **** :)

Well thank feck you don't have your way emoticon-0148-yes.gif

What I want is almost immaterial. I am ex-Department of Transport and investigated fatalities involving aftermarket products and that is a large part of my opposition to aftermarket tuning. Then working with another government department I did a BSc (2-1 Hons) majoring in thermo-dynamics. I also worked with one of “tuning houses” for one of my work placements on one of my degree courses.

We had this sort of clamp down on tuning parts with motorcycles a few years ago (enforced by the UK police) and I expect by a combination of EU legislation and enforcement and the fact that the manufacturers will provide all the on road performance you could possibly want “of the shelf”, then the aftermarket tuning industry will be forced to change to a “track only” mods. It is the way things are headed inexorably.

i can't see it to be honest.

Dangerous mods are dangerous mods. Casting a blanket ban is a bit of sledgehammer/nut approach isn't it?

I'm sure there are some 'tuning houses' that do not improve matters but to cast such aspercions is just plain wrong.

A vRS subforum sounds good at first, but I think it's a bad idea unless the subforum is used to discuss those issues that affect the vRS only. I read the Octavia II forum mostly, because reading all of them takes too much of my time. If facts and interesting material is posted about the Octavia in more places, it becomes harder to keep up to date.

If someone's got a vRS story or problem to share that has no common ground with other variants, then just say clearly in the subject line?

I'm happy with my remap and the car returns better fuel economy.

Somebody please recommend me a remap friendly insurance company.

Had enough trouble with mine over the stock vRS, didn't want to insure me after I sold the Pug. I'm 47 with no points and 9+ years NCB FFS.
