Featured Replies

Has anybody bought a service reset tool off ebay or any other outlet? I have just serviced my octavia so could do with resetting the warning on the dashboard but didnt want to buy a pants reset tool!

I also could do with removing steering wheel to swap the indicator stalk as i think that is pooped as it clicks and i have swapped the indicator relay switch but dont want to remove and have the airbag light on or would that not stay on?

Hi

I recently bought an Autel MaxScan VAG405 from talkToMyCar.co.uk here I see it advertised a little cheaper on Ebay but this company allows you to pay via google and they delivered in two days.

The unit cost 90 quid and does what you will need. It reads VAG codes and also generic codes. It resets all codes and service lights including variable servicing and long life oil. It also does a few diagnostic test but all in all a simple tool that covers the basics well. The codes come up with the numbers and also a text description. There is also a code lookup tool you can download off the manufacturers site.

Hi, could any of the experts tell me what extra things can vag-com do that this autel scanner can't andhow likely am I to need to use these functions? £54 delivered seems a good price for this unit!

VCDS (HEX CAN version) can read and erase fault codes from all of the controllers, there can be approaching 20 different controllers. Read, record and play back data, adaptations to change the way theses controllers behave, enabling of upgrades such as cruise control, security access to enable additional keys. It is also regulary updated, so it will work with new models.

It looks like that tool is limited to resetting the service display, which you can do anyway, via the dash buttons for fixed interval servicing and looking at/erasing fault codes in one controller.

How do you reset the service warning via the dash? I didn't realise you could ! That's the main reason I wanted the reset tool

ITS IN THE MANUAL

If your car is on fixed servicing (10k), then the following procedure (taken from the Owners Manual, page 60):

It is possible to reset the service interval display with the reset kn0b of the trip counter as follows:

- Switch off the ignition and press the reset kn0b of the trip counter below the speedometer and hold.

- Switch on the ignition and release the reset kn0b. The message 'service' or 'service now' appears in the display1

- Turn the kn0b to setting the clock to the right until the message is reset

[1: On certain models the service message 'service OIL' or 'service INSP' appears in the service interval display.]

However if your car is running on LL oil on a variable service schedule (up to 30k) then you will need to reset via vag-com/vcds/reset tool/generic fault reader/etc.

Brilliant! It worked thanks guys once again what a top forum with very helpfull members.

That looks like it should do the job - pointless if your on fixed though, as previously mentioned it can be reset for free, via the dashboard.

Reset of 'OIL' and 'SERVICE' dash light can be done easily yourself.

Mines on variable servicing, is there anyway to change it to regular servicing?

Just do the dash reset I mentioned in post 7, that switches the car to fixed (10k). To switch back to variable, a dealer or use of vag-com is required (or maybe the ebay reset tool - not sure on that front).
