Sat Nav install

Featured Replies

Been thinking about it for a while but never got round to it until today, so here's a few pictures of my "hard wired" Sat Nav install... Added a 12v socket in the fuse box area and plugged the Sat Nav into this and cabled behind the dash...

Neat looking job that. Where would I source one of the 12v sockets for the fuse box that you speak of? and what is the earth cable in the 2nd pic? part of the install?

I got the socket from Maplin and yes, the earth wire is part of the install, I've put a blade connector into the fuse box, into an inline fuse to the positive connector on the socket. Then the earth wire from the negative connection to metal on the car...

The socket I got was this one Clicky but I paid 2.99 for it when I was in Maplin for something else and saw it... It's been sitting in a box for ages.

There is another one if you're happy to solder the connections here

Good man.

1. Any links to the "blade connector"?

2. How do you know which side of the fuse slot to insert it into?

3. Does it turn on and off with the ignition?

TIA

I had the connectors already, but Halfords sell a box assorted connectors.

I used a multimeter to work out where to plug the connections into.

The unused fuse slots had a mixture of permanent and switched connections so you can choose either

Nice job that, can't beat the Brodit system. I took a slightly different way - http://briskoda.net/...ox/page__st__20

I looked at doing something with the top box too, but decided as the power cable is also the TMC antenna, then having the cable lengthways through the dash would be better than bunching it up somewhere in or around the top box... Also, the Navigon mount doesn't work with the top box, it's huge and unwieldy and I couldn't work out a way of getting it to work on there.

Agree with the Brodit kit though, not cheap but just works really well

looking good!

how does the bracket fix to the dash? any chance of a side piccie?

cheers

It clips to the dash trim like most of the Brodit mounts do, and then the device specific holder screws into this.

I've used them in a 406, X-Type and two 9-3s before the vRS... Along with various device specific holders - I dread to think how much I've spent in the past few years on bits of plastic and power connectors moulded to shape emoticon-0136-giggle.gif
