oil around EGR butterfly and in pipe to intercooler?

Featured Replies

right this is where im at, thought i had a leaky oil seal from my turbo as the area around it was wet with muck and oil. but as i was investigating i found that the rubber oil ring on the pipe that gos to the EGR down to the intercooler was damaqed. so im hopin this is what is causing the mess as it is directly above the same area. but should there be any oil anywhere near the butterfly on the EGR? when i took the pipe off there was oil around the butterfly and traces of oil in the pipe leading to my intercooler? there is no black smoke at all and the performance is still the same. no issues at all with the engine just this oil trace is worrieng me a little? any ideas? it is remapped by the way. could a clogged up EGR have anythin to do with it?

no one?

no one?

My EGR has always had a covering of oil from some leaky componant relating to it. Skoda told me not to worry about it, its apparently quite a usual thing for these (which suprises me cause from experience they liked changing/fixing anything that was up and great cost!). It doesn't smoke at all, but its not been remapped yet. (this is the PD100 btw)

Mine does it too, bit of a pain, just clean it off every now and then!

Its probably still there from your last oil change, mine has oil there too. wipe it out with a kitchen towel and check again tomorrow.

Oil in intercooler/EGR housing usually comes from 1 of 2 souces :- 1.Leaking turbo oil seals or 2. Engine ventilation breather hose. Turbo may continue to function for considerable time with small leaks. Breather may be blocked valve or may be due to general engine wear from blow-by from piston rings or valve stem seals .

It is quite normal to have some oil in the EGR , the Air filter box , the I/c pipes and I/C itself.. The only problem is the exhaust soot and oil eventually gum up the VNT mechanism in the turbo as the gases and oil are constatnly circulating the turbo and intercooler. The problem usually affects high mileage cars but not always, it depends on the quality of fuels, oils and short journeys. The i/c pipework and turbo can be cleaned out if poor running and VNT mechanism starts to gum up. You can buy some special gels to free the VNT but do mean dismantling the turbo to do it proper like.

unless the set up has changed on my 56 blt engine...the egr has a plunger and the crankcase breather is vented into the air intake which contains oil vapoured air..
