More Woes. Help Needed

Featured Replies

Hello,

Will get right to the point.

I was driving to the cinema tuesday night when i started to hear a howl coming from the car, it wasnt very loud but happened when accelerating. As it happened close to the cinema i decided to monitor it when i left to go home. When i left, the howl was not there but there was a type of squeak which increased with the speed. Finally when i got to the gas station it felt as if a bearing seized or was seizing, the symptoms being that there was a metallic squeaking noise right before the car stopped and it needed a little welly to move again. I didnt want to drive home so i got it recovered home. Today i took it to a mechanic a few houses down from me. When turning right into his yard, there was a lot of squeaking followed by a loud "click" sound. He jacked the car up and tried to rotate the wheels. The front left wheel was moving as if it was in park while moving the right wheel caused the left wheel to move along with it. There was also a noise coming from the transmission. The diff bearing or something else in the transmission is suspected. However, the squeaking stopped when i was driving back home (less than 100 metres away) but a strange smell then came, almost like something burning. The car is 208000Km/ 6 yrs old

Please help, any ideas etc

Cheers, Peter

sticky brake calliper for the smell maybe? There again I know nothing about automatics, so can't make any suggestions on that front.

Right, to update.

It is some of the bearings in the diff which have gone. I need a crown wheel, the crown wheel bearings as well as the seals.

The diff was somehow completely dry. I suspect it happened when the exhaust was leaking. The added heat from the exhaust seems to have negatively affected the oil in the diff.

I am however unable to find out the part number for the crown wheel. The part numbers i have so far are for the bearings and the seals

The numbers are:

096 323 981 Bearing

002 517 185A Bearing

096 323 862 Seal

If anyone has or can find out the part number for the Crown wheel (probably listed under another name) please let me know

Edit: It's for the 4 speed automatic transmission. Code: FDH

Many thanks

Peter
