Chain or Belt? 1.2 TSI

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am wondering if the 1.2 TSI is belt or chain drive? When I bought her from the dealer I was told it has timing chain and after some research on Briskoda about this engine, it is also noted to be a chain.

However, HonestJohn noted in a Polo review that it has a cambelt? Wikipedia isn't much help. Are there any definitive source?

Many Thanks,

All the petrol 1.2 3 cylinder VW group engines that I have seen have been chain driven. An easy way to tell is to have a look at the drivers side of the engine, as a rule of thumb, if it is chain driven it will have a metal cover on the end (bolted down and sealed), if belt driven the cover will be plastic (usually clipped on). Honest John, from what I've seen on past visits is not 100% accurate.

Appears to show a chain in this VW video on the design and development of the 1.2TSI

Regards,

TP

I have no idea whether the TSI has chain or belt, but I can try to find out when I get mine in around two weeks (been waiting since february!)

What I wanted to point out is please don't confuse the non-turbocharged 3 cylinder 1.2 petrol engine with the 1.2 TSI - I don't think these two have anything more than engine size in common. The TSI is a completely different engine, 4 Cyl, 8 valve etc.

In the blurb for the 1.2 engine it says chain driven.

This is what I can see in ElsaWin pictures: there is a chain...

Thanks all, here is the link: http://honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/volkswagen/vw-polo-12tsi for the Jonestjohn article - which is wrong.

I am also wondering whether the engine is 16v? I think there was a thread about it being 8v or 16v, I think the one fitted to the Yeti is the 16v.

Cheers

Your thinking is wrong

Yeti 1.2 TSI is a 4 cylinder with 2 valves per cylinder

Look at the screenshot taken from ElsaWin (the official tool for VAG cars services):

I must admit, I was wondering, after someone mentioned 3 cylinders.........

I have owned cars with both the 1.2 3cyl and 1.2 tsi engines. Both chain cam and both cracking little motors. Interestingly both average about 42mpg with me.

Thanks 8V is still fine for this car, is there a 16V version?

It drives very well indeed, I do like the turbo whistle.

There isn't a 16v version, and probably never will be. Why would you want one?
