What I did to my air con last night

Featured Replies

My re-circ flap has been making the noises for about two years and I finally cracked yesterday.

So at 8.45pm last night I decided to do something drastic.

Nearly two hours and knackered hands later I managed to disconnect the power to the motor.

What a ****er of a job, I ended up lying across the the front seat with my head upside in the passenger footwell.

Then I had to get under the scuttle panel to make sure I had the vent open to fresh air, which is another arse of a job.

I now have a nice quiet cabin,

How anyone can actually change the motor is beyond me !!!!

My fat hands probably didn't help though lol

The worst part is that the Mrs didn't even notice how quiet it was in there :(

Just thought I would share this with you all !!

They never do mate, I'd a noticed though ;) lol!

I hear so many rattles in my car and SWMBO don't really notice any of them!

Mines been doing this for over a year. With all this warm weather that we are having Im noticing it more. Does get annoying. Presumably now you cant use the recirculate setting?

Funny you say that, it still changes the sound of the air flow, not quite sure what it's doing though.

But in effect your'e right, no more re-circ, but to be honest I hardly ever used anyway, a small price for the peace and quiet.

Mine has done that since I bought it in March, I always leave mine on recirculate anyway as I get colder air that way and the noise goes.

it still sounds like I have Darth Vader breathing in the glove box though lol

If hit the re-circ button it would quieten down a little, but the biggest problem was the pulsing when the air con was on, and the scratching when it was switched off (not often tbh).

My flap was constantly switching between modes.

I think I read somewhere once that leaving it on re-circ isn't healthy, something to do with manky air iirc.

I have sneaky 'artists' hands, and it was still a complete nightmare when I changed the motor in mine. Skoda cunningly placed loads of screws and jagged metal objects in the way so you end up getting mashed to hell!

I dropped the blower motor out, so I could grab hold of the flap while working on it.

I understand your joy at doing this though! I almost lost my rag and kicked a hole in the dash doing mine, and the noises and pulsing drove me insane slowly. Bring back cable opertated flaps!!

As you said, having it on recirc constantly isn't much good for you. Let out a massive rotten fart, and it'll last for hours! Mmmm meaty

I was under the impression that all recirc did was close off air coming into the cabin, So if you went past a farmyard you would not die :giggle: . Was not aware that recirc would be any colder than aircon on none recirc mode as surely the climate control is regulating the temps?

I'm fairly sure that the aircon pump switches off when you hit the recirc button anyway. I seem to remember reading that in the workshop manual, but I need to check to confirm as it was a while ago.

I only use mine for super long tunnels in europe. Or when you get stuck behind some tractor engined scabby diesel car on the road!

By the time I notice the smell of a farmyard it's usually too late and one touch of the recirc button traps the smell in the car :D

Having spent many years driving in California, I use their practice of putting the A/C on Auto and selecting recirc for around 5 minutes to bring the cabin temp down quickly. So yes, the air-con does work on our cars with recirc selected and it cools the car down quicker.

Fattys theory ................

You're re-circing cold air rather than drawing in hot air. Hence cooler air quicker !!

I'm open to other ideas lol

I was under the impression that air con cools the air that’s coming in to the car down to the temperature you set it to, if the recirculation button is on the air its trying to cool is colder to start with so it seems colder to me? I might well be wrong but surly it would not be putting as much strain on it if its cooling down the air that’s already cold rather then trying to cool 30 degrees air down to 18 degrees etc.???

I might be wrong though??

Oh and the are con does work with the recirculation button on :-)

Ok I can see that it would get air cooler quicker in the cabin if the air outside is hotter, thus you are just using the aircon to work up to the controlled temp you set climate at without the hot air coming in to make it work harder. But once aircon has regulated that temp (based on what you set it to) then regardless of outside temp the cabin is being kept at a constaint temp. :S

As above, that is my theory, which is normally proved wrong...
