Bolero - my SD card works perfectly!

Featured Replies

I've got a 2010 Octavia Scout (build week 20) with the Bolero stereo.

I was prepared for the slow access from the SD card that everyone's warned about.

I finally got a large SD card in the post today - Integral Ultima Pro - 16GB SDHC Class 6. I've put 10.8GB on it, which is 2657 files spread over 267 folders.

Just tried it in the car. It works. Perfectly. Exactly as it should.

It takes between 3 and 4 seconds from inserting the card to playing the first track. If you turn it off and on again, the music starts within a second. Moving between tracks takes less than a second. You can call up the selection screen, browse every file and folder, tap the song, and it starts playing it, again in under a second.

I'd heard that they were planning a firmware update from week 22, but mine was week 20.

I'm very happy.

I haven't tried mix functionality yet. Will report back after trying it on my next long drive.

That's excellent news - makes the iPod connector almost redundant. You just need to update your signature and post some pics now!

At risk of taking the thread off topic - could you tell me if your Scout came with sill protectors for the back doors?

Thanks,

Les.

Mine works perfectly too.

So how do you work that out then?

A 16Gb SD card can only hold 3,000 tracks at 320kbps, if you're lucky.

Because the MDI interface is an expensive add-on to start with (£200), combined with an iPod (£150+) which is a vastly overpriced and overrated MP3 player. Plus the fact that you have to leave an ipod in the car (or carry it everywhere).

So considering all of that, the compromise of being able to hold "only" 3,000 tracks (250+ albums) on an SD card costing a few quid seems like a no-brainer to me!

I agree. I've copied 2500 files onto my SD card, and that was every music mp3 file on my computer, and every one from my house file-server (which serves music to the rest of the house).

And I haven't even filled the 16GB card.

Now I do have quite a lot of CDs that I've never got round to ripping to the computer, but I suspect that if I really cared about those I'd have got round to it before now!

I don't have an iPod, so the idea of getting one for the car seems silly. But if I was the sort of person to carry around an iPod with me, then I'd want to be able to listen to it in the car, rather than keeping two copies of everything and trying to keep them in sync.

That's why I've got all my music on a file server at home (and it's a shame I now have to try to keep that in sync with the car memory card!)

OK

Got mine in May, takes about 30 seconds for original load and again the same when going back to the full list of folders.

Card type = Integral Ultima Pro - 8GB SDHC Class 6

So the queston is...............if the firmware has changed how do we all go about getting it updated?

Assuming the problem is fixed and SD cards are now pretty responsive, can anyone tell me if there is a maximum size card that the Bolero can recognize? I'm guessing that if it can recognize 16GB cards, it could also recognize 32GB cards, but it would be good to get that confirmed before investing in a 32GB card. Again it's just a guess on my part, but I would think that 32GB would be the limit, because cards greater than 32GB cease to use the SDHC format; instead they use the SDXC format (limit 2TB :o), but I think this SDXC format will need a different type of card read mechanism, probably not supported by the Bolero.

The latest Bolero manual states "SDHC . . . cards upto 32Gb are available" which suggests to me you can use 32Gb SDHC cards.

The quicker load speed wouldn't be anything to do with the class of the card - class 4 vs class 2? Or is the faster speed only an advantage on writing to the card?

Just off to order a 16gb (Sandisk £10.79 Amazon) card now!!

The class of card refers to its write speed. Read speed is invariably faster than write speed. Some less scrupulous manufacturers might quote read speed to give a false impression of performance. I think that the higher class/higher performance cards really come into their own when you are streaming HD video or working with a very fast high resolution digital camera. I'd doubt that audio streaming, even at high bit rates would max a card out.

I see you've gone with SanDisk, which is a well established mainstream brand. Amazingly cheap too!.

Yes, after a few mishaps with other manufacturers, every SanDisk card I've ever had has been spot on. Have gone for Extreme III's in my digital SLR which are nice and fast. But for data streaming, as you say, a class 2 card should suffice.

is there anyway of checking the software version on the belero?

You can plug other things into the MDI, not just ipods. For example you can plug a 500GB+ external HDD into the MDI as long as its self powered, no ipod or SD card has yet reached that capacity. You can also plug in any USB2 flash drive, and so on. All you need is the USB cable which costs about £15.

OK, so can those of us with the slug 1.0 version of the Bolero firmware get it upgraded at the dealers, or are we stuck with it?

Bob.

I visited the dealers recently just to ask about this very problem and they said that there wasn't an update available for the Bolero. Obviously BS then :wonder:

I don't want to sound smug but the SD card on my brand new car's Bolero works extremely well. Its made my iPod redundant (except for podcasts which I listen to through the AUX). I also love the fact that you can load 6 discs of a CD book (public library £1.30 for 3 weeks) without having to go to the boot!

My headlights (not Xenon) are much better too.

Checked yesterday, and there are no sill protectors in the back. Can't say I'm really bothered, the back hardly gets used.

I did some more playing around yesterday, and noticed a couple of things:

(1) When browsing music from the 'selection' screen, it lists the file names, not the ID3 track details. It's only when you start playing a track that it loads the ID3 information to give you track name, artist, album. Did the old firmware display the ID3 information in the selection screen? If so, that might be why it's quicker now.

(2) I tried the 'mix' functionality. It only selects from music in the current folder, but there is an option in the setup screen to include sub-folders as well. When I tried 'mix' in a folder with sub-folders, it randomly included songs in the sub-folders in amongst the others, i.e. it didn't play all of one sub-folder before moving on. However to get this to work you need to start the mix at the top level folder - if you're already in a sub-folder when you start 'mix', it will only play that folder. Tonight I'm going to try putting one song at the top level of the card so that if I hit 'mix' whilst playing that track it will hopefully randomly play from everything on the card - I'll report back if that works!

Would be interested in your results.

I used a little program from another thread, that makes your SD card Bolero friendly, & was very impressed with the results.

Now I just need the car delivered so I can use it emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

It does it in the same way that yours does so it pays to have some sort of ordering to the file names.

I guess two or three SDcards are still smaller and more convenient than an IPOD for using in the car. I would certainly welcome a bolero with a working SD slot

I would too, IF it did things properly. As it can't, I use MDI + Ipod.

Any chance of folk putting a few folders on here so we can all download them B)

A sort of whats on my Sd card or i pod all MP3 of course

No, that's illegal file sharing.

That's good to hear (no pun intended ;))

Might have to get another car compatible with a Bolero then! :D
