Skoda 120 New Project

Featured Replies

Just picked up a new project - after finishing my last project. I have been working on an Alfasud restoration/customisation for the last two years. Now at an end - I was lucky enough to get my hands on a pretty straight Skoda 120. I intend to finish this Skoda to the same standard as my Alfasud which is not concours but you will agree is top money and top quality with no expense spared.

DSCF1185.jpg

Yes it has no engine as the former owner wants to keep it for his other Skoda 120 GL - but my brother "Teflon Tom" has a 100hp Polo engine and adapter plate ready to cut through the bulkhead and fit this new engine. He did have this engine in his felicia pickup.

The project should be reasonablly easy.

Engine in

Re-fit interior which is all present but out of car at present

Insure it

MOT it

Tax it

Respray it

Thrash it!

in that order

I have got plans in motion already to respray it Storm Blue, the Skoda Octavia RS colour and I know where there is a really nice set of retro alleycat alloys on 4x130 pcd. I will be starting this project up in the next couple of weeks.

I will post pictures of progress as and when

Here is a picture of the little beasty. She was MOT's then mothballed after 100 miles of being tested? don't know why. The car has been dry stored for the past 2-3 years by former owner. As you can see it has the birdbath spoiler and clear light clusters on front and rear. It has rallysport mirrors and competition suspension, spax adjustables all round. The interior is mint however rear interior is out at present. I have never seen a Skoda 120 of this age in this remarkable condition.

Here is the 135 engine he is going to keep - owner says it is valuable - maybe to him it is? I don't know?

Looks good....its not alone in being in that condition though, if you look on the main OC site there are quite a few in that or better condition. The 135 engine isnt valuable, but the pair of twin 40s are worth a bit. It looks to have a strange exhaust set up on it....looks like a tubular manifold attached to a standard exhaust??

Parts are still easy to find...you should have no trouble replacing the battered and cut rear panel if you need it.

Is it a 4 or 5 speed? When youve got it to bits you might want to think about sourcing a semi trailling rear end for it......almost all 120s had the older swing axle rear suspension which isnt known for it grip and poise!

hi did u say a vw engine is going in from a polo i was thinking about a vw engine but wasnt sure it would merry up 2 the trans axel on the skoda so ive been talking 2 fireye's as he's nearly completed his mgf transplant but if u manage your conversion it would b great 2 c KEEP IN TOUCH MANY THANKS!! **RODASKODA**

Teflon Tom has come up with the plan.

The VW Polo GTi engine is going to be mounted upright to stop oil surges. We intend to cut through the bulkhead and attach a service hatch for the ignition module that sticks out on the back of the engine. The adapter plate is going to be made in the next couple of weeks. We should be taking delivery of the car from present owner after this bankholiday weekend to start project up. Tom also is going to setup the engine on a manifold he already has and run the engine on a set of Honda CBR 600 carbs.

Once the car is running and my paint guy Mark is back from Poland visiting someone will organise a respray as quick as possible. This will be my winter daily driver and put the Alfasud away.

been a busy bee with autocad... custom bellhouse adaptor plate (it's raw in this state, will need machining afterwards), and intake manifold flange and other bits and pieces to be laser cut in mild steel plate

p.s mr Czech Bra Size, your lucky to have a boffin like me on this project...

planning on using a Megajolt system with a ford zetec (edis) coilpack on this engine

Nice Alfa project; are those Delta Integrale arch extensions I see?

And nice solid shell for the Skoda project. As others hinted at, the semi-trailing arm rear suspension is a straight bolt-in, as long as you can find one.

The engine the guy wanted to keep; if it's built to justify the twin-40s, it's worth over a grand. Not joking.

Oh and welcome aboard; I guess this hobby runs in the family?

No the Afla has a factory fitted kit of which there was only 30 built as far as I am aware - may be proved wrong, but I doubt anyone is qualified to argue the toss? I have been trying my hardest to find a Lancia Delta Intergrale Evo for ages and snap a picture next to one....Finally found a red one at the Retro cars event at haynes Museum last month.

DSCF1409-1.jpg

As you can see the arches are more dramatic and the sud being a two door flows much better than the Lancia (in my opinion?)

The kit is called an Alfastyl kit and is meant to be ultra rare - there are only a hand full of these cars left in the UK.

BACK TO THE SKODA PROJECT - thanks for praise - it's the best fun you can have with your clothes on and driving it is flippin brill - I am also safe in the Knowledge if I parked it up at the side of a busy road I would firstly come back to find a note asking to sell it, and knowing you would never see another one pass by in the same decade you parked it up, there is hardly any left these days and mines unique.

Most of the cars fitted with this kit have long gone - most were used as race cars in the 1984 Group B cup. The cars ran on the later 1.7 8v but with the addition of a supercharger - this made these car very very fast.

Cheers for the extra photo - I agree that the Sud rear looks more finished than the Integrale. Supplimentary - are the Sud rear lights actually extended into the backs of the flares?

Also, I'm sure Tom will tell you, I'll generally be positive and at least try to be helpful about project cars. On the odd occasions I sound negative it's actually an "I don't think you'll actually achieve what you want to do by doing what you propose because..."

Yes the engine the guy is keeping has twin 40 sidedrafts. He says the engine I could have for £1200 which is what it would cost to rebuild. He says it has racing cams, ports polished and is very quick in the car! thanks Ken O'Neil

ha.. tell him he can keep his wet lined 70's-esque pushrod snotter... they are fairly rare though i'll give him that, there are a few parts on them which are unique like the sump and oil pickup, and the manifold. but it certainly isn't worth £1200, the carbs are probably quite valuable though

edit: the skoda engines are actually very well engineered and can be tuned up to some pretty respectable figures, but they aren't my cup of tea... i've got vivid memories of my dad driving an estelle which used to cook up all the time with steam pouring out and people would laugh as they drove by. he used to make it backfire deliberately by turning the ignition on and off really quickly as we were driving into the school which was mortally embarrasing... funny how things change isn't it, wouldn't have been seen dead in one years ago, but you can't get them for love nor money nowadays

That's the Crap brown one Tom? In fact I can't remember what colour it was but assuming it was brown, but could have been any colour as it was not my favourite car my dad owned. I remember it with horrible memories of trying to slump in the seat so nobody could see me - yes tides have turned and owning one of these now you are considered to be a connoisseur rather than a fool .

I think old Russian and Iron fisted cars are cool Ladas, Skodas, Gaz m13 Chaika, Moskvich, Zils and Yags

I've seen a banner just like that in the boot of my 65 Octavia :giggle:

I had to work so couldn't make it to that group photo shoot which was done in the car park of

North Lindsey Technical College on a Sunday morning.

Nice to see that someone is restoring an Estelle

FIAT 124, but with thicker sheet metal (and a restyle for the later Riva). So much so, that Arbarth tuning parts work on them

Was think of a Lada 4x4 truck they did niva?

Yes.

anywho, progress has been made in the engine department... just off out to get some bolts then i'll be back.. as the terminator once said :giggle:

Yes it does seem that everyone is well equainted with this particular Skoda - you won't recognise it when it's done - In fact the first of the last two photos the car has the old style grill on and in the second shot it has the grill on which is on the car currently. Does anyone know if they have an old style grill in first picture kicking about to replace it?

Cash waiting - PM me or Tom to arrange
