K&N Air Filter - V6 TDi

Featured Replies

Had my V6 TDi Edition 100 remapped last year and thirlled with the result but I read somewhere that improved airflow might be useful after such a mod. Has anyone fitted a K&N - remapped or not - and what was the result?

Thanks

Personally I'd say just replace the paper filter every 10k miles.

Sorry to 'slightly' hijack the thread but I've been toying with getting my V6 remapped and wonder if you'd share where you got yours done and your overall impressions.

Got mine done by Will at Performance Torque outside Wolverhampton. Performance is awesome. If you thought the car was effortless to drive before, this will amaze you. Off the line it is a lot quicker, mid range makes overtaking a mere twitch of the throttle. BHB went up from 157 to 182, tourque went up by about 35 or 40. I've got the before and after figures somewhere if you want detail but the car is a true 100 mph cruiser and an easy match for my previos BM 530i M Sport.

Fuel economy doesn't seem to have changed. I get about 34 running around and up to 44 on a trip if I keep it as 75 ish, otherwise it falls to about 42.

If there's a weak spot its the autobox. It's a bit 'slushy' and the torque converter lock up doesn't come in as quick as I'd like so I'm having the oil and filter changed to see if it makes a difference. You notice it most when pulling off a roundabout but that's not down to the tuning.

I'm going to get a K&N to try it. Not to get more performace but to see what impact it has on economy and soot reduction - soot build up in the manifold area of these engines is a common fault so I also use Forte's diesel treatment every 5k miles or so when I'm going on a long run.

If you want to know anything else, ask back.

Thanks for that, I had whittled my short list to P-Torque and did swing by a few weeks ago (slight detour on my drive home) for a chat as to what could be done with my car. They were closed (it was a Friday when England were playing in the World Cup). My fault for not calling and wanting to chat face to face

I'll give them a call when I'm passing in a few weeks and see how much they can relieve my wallet for.

I like you found the Tiptronic box occasionally wanting and being poor at junctions and in the wrong gear at roundabouts (potentially down to the Dynamic Shift Program and Tiptronic Strategy), after researching the subject on some Passat forums and looking at the manual I broke out the trusty VAG-COM and changed some of the auto box settings (DSP = Off and Tip Strategy = Old) and it is more sprightly now pulling off and accelerating from low speeds. See my post here :

Changing the fluid will, I'm sure, help. I changed mine a couple of weeks ago (annual process).

If you're planning on doing it yourself drop me a PM for some tips.

That's really interesting. I had 2 V6 TDi Passats before the BM so the Superb is my 3rd 'Passat' since 2000. The first one was a 2000 150bhp estate. Second was a 163 2004 Sport spec saloon. The boxes on the Passat's did seem bit more responsive so I wonder if they had the mods you suggest?

Don't suppose you're anywhere near Bridgend are you? I'll swap you a drive of my remap and a beer for the adjustment to my autobox.

Hi, a quick question for Cledwen.. With the autobox mods you've done, is it faster at pulling off?? or does it just shift quicker. Cos ive just bought a VAG-COM cable and sourced a registered version of the software. so i should be able to do the mods you have.. ( LOL who am i kidding.. i'll probably end up stuck in 1st, but its worth a try anyway) As standard It seems to be case of, look left, look right, look left again, accelerate.......then hope the car coming towards you misses your back end. I'm sure you know what i mean..

Regarding the auto gearbox mod. I've just done it and its a lot better now... Much better for town driving and general A - B usuage.

Sorry been stuck in a field in Norfolk for the last 2 weeks camping with no internet access so unable to answer all your queries

The car is not really quicker at pulling off though it depends on the gear the car has selected. Remember if you want to pull off quick, once you've planted the throttle the turbo has to spool up, then pressurise all that induction piping and the two intercoolers before delivering the required fuelling, it's all down to drving to the cars characteristics and planning your manoeuvres.

Doing the mods listed in the post detailed above basically switches off a couple of bits of, in my mind, unecessary extra software in the gearbox ECU.

Think of it this way the DSP is working and chooses the gearbox map to your most recent driving style; think 'pottering around'. Then all of a sudden you want to give the car 'the beans', the ECU thinks 'well this isn't the way we've been doing this so I'll ignore you for now until you keep burying the throttle then things happen. Turning off DSP removes the 'nanny'.

Read my original post, turning off DSP removes the nanny and original tiptronic strategy stops the box changing down when in 'Tip' when you have already selected a lower gear.

I used to drive a Saab 9-5 Aero auto, selecting the sport 'S' mode did wonders for the characteristics of the car (converter lock up and red line changes), unfortunately this does not happen with the Tip box.

These VAGCOM changes inproved things, for me and my style of driving, but don't expect the car to be transformed into a fire breathing animal

Ye thanks man, your guide helped a lot. I much prefer the auto-box now.. Used to get annoying that it would downshift when i just wanted to go. Now it seems to hold gears longer like its in tiptronic but without the 'hassle' of pushing the gearstick up and down.. lol

P.S. sorry about hijacking this thread

I also have a 2.5 tdi slusher and the torque converted gradual lockup in 2nd and 3rd gear is a bit annoying indeed, it kind of feels like I have a 7 gear auto box rather than 5! BUT, I have had the fluid replaced and filter too in the auto box by SKODA dealer and that made no difference at all.

Have you seen any smoke increase after re-tune. Mine will only smoke a bit at hard pull-away (I can only see it at night in following cars' headlights).

Mine is standard not tuned. Quite happy with performance, cruises happily at 100mph all day (in Europe - cannot do that over here, too many average speed cameras and lane hoggers....). Fuel economy drops a bit but interestingly whether you drive this engine very carefully (70-75) or 90+ the difference is only a maximum of 6-7 mpgs, last bit of aggressive high speed driving I did in Italy chasing those crazy Italians basically 90-120 all the time I got 37mpg. Do you find the same in your case?

Hi Guys

Just thought I'd update you on my VAGCOM progress.

Hooked up with KEV MAB today who kindly:

* Re programmed my auto a la Cledwen's advice

* Turned off my ding ding x 5 seatbelt warning

* Added a very sweet little 'beep' to my remote locking to confirm locked

* Enabled my anti hijack

* Enabled the auto unlock on key removal.

Happy or what???

Thanks particularly to KEV for doing the job (recommended) and Cledwen for coming up with the auto box box mod. Thanks also to those who offered to meet up and hook me up to their VAGCOM. Kev was closest but the helpfulness of members is what makes this site great.
