140 TDI weighs more than 110?

Featured Replies

Why does the 110 TDI 4x4 weigh 5kg less than the 140 TDI 4x4?

Cos the cylinders have been bored out to fit the 140 pistons so less weight

Im being sarcastic by the way i haven't a clue :)

It's only a guess, but 5 speed gearbox instead of 6 speed?

Maybe the red 'i' on the rear badge is really heavy??

Hi Angerbundsen,

me thinks the 4 paw 110 still has a six speed box, only thing I know for definite is the brakes are smaller but that doesn't account for 5kg :wonder: can only think there using lighter components in places as there's not the same level of torque :wonder: such as drive-shafts may be :wonder:

wild guess.....but bigger intercooler?

+ more soundproofing material?

do the diesels have more sound proofing than the petrols?

Hi Mike,

yes is the simple answer, under bonnet blanket and full engine under-tray (padded I think) spring instantly to mind. The CR is much quieter than the venerable PD even in first generation form as fitted to my pre WK45/09 Monster, both at idle and on the move.

Thanks TP.

Any idea about the cabin? any more sound proofing in there, Is there any in the boot area?

Mike

Thanks TP.

Couldn't say for sure if the forward cabin insulation differers much and there appears to be little in the boot area other than the usual boot floor carpet and bits of polystyrene. The rear arch liners are of the more modern 'woven fabric' type to reduce sound but obviously your going to get tyre noise from the rough road surfaces we are plagued with and the rather wide tyres SUK have fit to opt for on the SE and Elegance.

There is a reasonable degree of carpeting material under the rear seats which covers the the rear drive differential; have driven with the middle chair removed quite a bit and I've not noticed any real increase in noise levels.

Thanks TP

When I test drove a 1.8TSI yesterday the noise levels weren't too bad, more than a superb and more than my old BMW 530d.

I had extra sound proofing put in my octavia, but to be honest, not sure it made much difference. Put mainly in boot/back seat and a little in the footwells.

My bet is on this answer. But can one little gear really weigh that much?! Maybe the software in the CPU weighs 4kg to tell the brain it is a 110, 140 or 170! hehehe

Though I think the real answer might be the gearbox AND the brakes as TP said:

TP: yes the brochure does state that the 110 2x4 has a 5 speed gearbox. Only the 4x4 versions gets 6 speed boxes.

So I guess it is a combination of brakes and gearbox.

Different wheels?? Smaller or of a different design??

to add....why does the CR170 weigh 5kg more than the CR140?

....and the dsg weight premium is only 5kg over the manual

Just a few things different for the 170 over the 140: Definitely larger brakes and a different exhaust system. The dual outlets are larger and stainless. Probably also a diffeent turbo, but this would not add much weight.
